My face when the amount of possessions by demons in human history sharply fell with the beginnings of emotional therapy as well as proto-psychology. This being said, exorcisms in a lot of cases actually did relieve the sufferer from a lot of emotional stress. For that reason I see exorcisms an effective and theatrical treatment towards some sorts of psychological ailment, however the practice still lay within the realm of ignorance (speaking from a 21st century perspective). In the end whatever, if it works it works.
