Hereditary was a complete mess. The king Paimon theme had so much potential but the makers of the film blew it big time. Jump scares galore and an annoying soundtrack that constantly reminded you 'hey look, you are watching a horror film'. Only one shocking scene and even that made me laugh. Hysterical overacting abounds. How anyone dare to compare this to the Exorcist is beyond me.
Pyewacket was much better. Slow burn low-budget stuff yes but towards the end satisfyingly unsettling. Tells a story of a young girl who invokes a spirit to kill her mother but then has second thoughts.
Also, the Blackcoat's Daughter aka February has a nice lyrical atmosphere. One of the better possession movies currently out there. Directed by Oz Perkins, son of Anthony Perkins.
I'm waiting for Hereditary to come to theatres in my country and I saw Pyewacket. I really loved the movie, nicely done for a low budget movie..it's realistic compared to ants and insects coming out of the mouth of characters in the movie. I will watch Blackcoat's Daughter tonight, thanks for the suggestion.
edit: Blackcoat's Daughter is not a jump scare horror but I think the story stays with you. Need more such movies great atmosphere, location and sound.
