People have wondered "why these attempts to doctor up the image of the Marquis de sade as though he were a real author?" It's because the existence of that scandalous character from history is nothing more than a fabrication. Louie Sade said "my pen was my only rebellion" and it's true, because all his other public scandals were all show play theater or purely pen to begin with, all chaos magic really, and he was the chaossphere.
Consider that in official history anton lavoisier was taken to the guillotine but sade narrowly dodged it, it points to him being innocent, especially since I don't believe lavoisier was really executed anyway. You could say that a scandalous hated public character like louie sade could open people's conception to what might go on behind closed doors if this minor nobleman can act this way so publicly.
Some thought the reason for writing the book was a signal that people like this were controlling the royal government. So in underground spaces of thought it might have functioned as propaganda for the French revolution, which was important to the American revolution. As for any type of sadistic influence on the throne, thinking of sade as some kind of web to reel in such people, you could look to the spanish fly scandal, "come to france".
Chaos magic, strategic mythos development, like when Sade was labeled a "dangerous lunatic", then approached a man who believed in treating the mentally ill with music and theater. Sade was given the position of director of these plays put on with the other patients at the asylum.
