Good luck with that one. I call it Mind Magic, as it uses your mind only and some consider it the highest form of magic, because you can cause change this way by only thinking about it, so direct magic is not bad term.
Sometimes it can be achieved, but not easy thing. Simple, but hard to achieve. If you want to perform magic this way, you better be really in control of your mind. It's better to stick to incantations and all other stuff, at least until you totally perfekt your self-mastery.

I think it's another name for Energy Manipulation as well as what @Morell wrote.
But if you and your friends were talking about it then what did you and your friends say?

I remember quite a few years ago there was a system by a magician called Tomekeeper who called it direct magic and all that was needed was to vibrate at the same frequency at the spirit and work with them that way, likely energy manipulation or done with the mind but it could be done in other ways too I’m sure

magic without incantations
Ironically this would be "indirect" magic. If you want an effect without the work, it has to come from outside yourself, like from an object (fetish). You have to spend a lot of time and effort creating a certain effect with the object, usually you have this in mind when you create it, sort of like how your mood instantly shifts from shit to bright when a good friend enters the room, your mood will shift in whatever direction you need according to the object's purpose.

Combining several of these in an intentional order borders on ritual, but a spontaneous effect could occur in the way OP was thinking. I can't think of what "direct magic" could be other than like, warping the fabric of reality with some Tiferet & Kether union 🦧

magic can be automatically within you without the use of spells or incantations.
The spark is inherently in there, yes, but it's just a couch potato that won't do anything unless you guide it. With incantations, or God forbid artful & meaningful technique.
