Hello

Today I decided to "review" and mostly share with you a couple of Donald Tyson books I have acquired some 15 years ago, and that to my knowledge are all out of print.

I always enjoyed Donald Tyson's books, and these are my favorites (from the ones I have read).

The first one is "Portable Magic".

A very interesting book that the author claims, gives you a system to do Magik, and Ritual Magik anywhere, and all you need is a Tarot deck!

The first half of the book is basically the author explaining the Tarot, and associating it with the Qabala. Also, he spends a bit of the book describing (very vaguely) the ten sephyroth.

The second half is spent describing all the different rituals, which are rather complex.

At sometimes the book can be rather tedious, while at others, like the second half of it, is rather dense, and might need several reads.

The last I read it was some 10 years ago, and although, again, it can be rather dense, if you deal with the tarot regularly, and have mastered visualization technics, I believe the system(s) contained in this book could be rather useful.

Althoug out of print, they can be found still, just in case this rather meager "review" spiked your interest.

The second one, is "Familiar Spirits".

In this work, the author devised a system using what he calls "Power Glyphs". These glyphs represent a force, and each one is associated to a letter of the alphabet.
From what I recall, the glyphs are used as a substitute of the regular alphabet during the process. Basically, it uses abstraction and sigil technics.

From memory, I recall that the book at times, can be rather tedious, somewhat complex, but what I did enjoy is the way the process is described, to the detail, and in simple terms.

Then we have the "Tools"; a set of physical... err tools used in the process that even to a novice (at least to me) are rather confidence inspiring, and simple, like the portrait of the spirit, done by you, instead of an image or an idol, the "magnetic attractor" which is based on Franz Mesmer's animal magnetism, and the "Key".

The book is called "Familiar Spirits", but at times it seems to be more of a hybrid between familiars and servitors.

To my knowledge, it is out of print, but it still can be found used.
