I have always been drawn to the occult, magic(k), and the unusual. My personal approach to magic(k) is similar to many I've met or spoke with, its honing a craft no different than honing your own talents, artistic abilities or creative pursuits. On a personal note, I've been lost for quite some time in terms of what path to take and my focus is almost non-existent in terms of being able to get drawn into any of the books on the innumerous subjects within these circles of the occult and paranormal. I'm very much a psychic brick/dud. I don't seem to have strong visions of any kind or any extra sensory perceptions outside of your normal gut instincts (and even those instincts are faint or dull). I fail to understand a lot of high magic and even most of the basics. I read about chaos magic for a very short period (also to no avail). Have tried some extremely simple rituals and often practice ways to hone my focus and intent, all fruitless as well. I suffer the same kind of disconnection when it comes to any religions. I wish I could believe or see what other see and feel. I want to learn more, grow spiritually, and perfect my own personal craft, so all of this is what brought me here. I want to learn more from others and maybe find inspiration or a path that can lead me to better personal fulfillment/growth. Thanks to all who run this forum and are willing to share. Looking forward to learning more.

Welcome, dear sleepwalker. I'm glad you stumbled on this forum and decided to stick around.

A word of advice: If the perspective you hold now has done nothing but fail you, what use is it? Best to drop it and admit that you A: know nothing and B: believe falsehoods. That way you can cleanse your pallet and perhaps wake up from your anesthetized fugue.

You say you don't know what path to take, but you've also said yourself what your path is: you are on a path towards personal fulfilment and growth. What you're lacking is a system, which is typically divided by culture here. Many people make the dire mistake of choosing a system first without getting an understanding of what magic is or developing a proper cosmology, then become hollow puppets quoting authors they like and having empty heads.

I suggest, rather than getting hung up that you're not part of some esoteric in-group, you should focus on developing your focus. You'll get nowhere if you don't remedy that, because this work here requires focus, dedication, courage, and grit.

Best of luck and happy hunting.

Welcome to WF.

It’s okay to feel disconnected from magic at first or not get results. IllusiveOwl is right when they said it will help for you to find a cosmology that resonates with you. You definitely need to work the spiritual side to get great results on the magic practice side. That being said if you decide that no gods speak to you and go for a chaos magic approach that’s fine too. What matters most is what feels right for you.

When I first tried to learn how to use pendulums way back in 2011 it literally didn’t move at all. The main reason for that is my main focus wasn’t what I was actually asking because I was to worried about me accidentally swaying of effecting the results. So all I was doing really was thinking don’t move the pendulum. Obviously that makes for poor practice. I had to learn to relax and open myself up as a channel. Now I am capable of getting accurate and detailed results with them.

A good exercise I learned actually comes from a Chinese feng shui master I meant in Hawaii. Instead of worrying about tools you start with your body and lower your arms with your palms down as if they are resting on a table on either side of you. Then spread your fingers and focus on steadying your breathing. You want to slow your heart rate. I personally like to close my eyes for this but it’s not a rule that you have to. While doing that once you feel you are centered you can start to move around a little. While doing that you want to try and feel the energies in the space you are in. Usually the stronger an energy the more cool and tingly it feels but they can also feel hot just depends. This trick can help you find ley lines and places energy has gotten stuck among other things.

Now to take that practice farther you would want to try getting in that mind set and then try to detect a spirit while doing it. You can consider your hands like compasses or dowsing rods. When you have a finger spasm or your hand spasm in a non painful way that indicates the direction you want to go. You can use this same technique with yes no questions just decide which hand represents yes and no first. For in the field practice go on a ghost tour or haunted location and practice the technique while you are there. Within a week of serious practice with this technique you should start to see results. Anyway good luck on your spiritual journey and I’m sure the library section will be useful for you to be able to see what types of spirituality resonate with you and what magic practices.🦇✨

I read your post about an hour ago. Coming back to it, here are my thoughts. You are thinking waaaaaay too much about it to be honest. Stop it. This isn't an intellectual enterprise. Its just not.

I dont have the "answer" for you. But I can make a suggestion. Find a demon, angel, Deity or planetary force that resonates with you. Then find a ritual you like and JUST TRY IT. That's all you have to do. Just try it.

If a spirit resonates with you, then you have some sort of belief. That's a perfect start. Try it. This shit is supposed to be fun, wild as fuck, scary as hell, life changing, deep, etc. Give it a chance. Reading books will give you scaffolding, just remember scaffolding isn't the building. That said, there are lots of great books to help you with the scaffolding part. You have to step into the circle at some point. And yes, that is the entire point to all this. Getting into the circle and doing the magick.

You can even let your path unfold as you go. I know, others do it differently and that's cool (There is no wrong way to eat a Reece's). Dont just dip your ugly ass toes in the pool, jump in it man. Let the waters help you choose your path, or maybe, just maybe, you will discover you had a path all along.

I hope this helps. Take what resonates with you, and burn the rest. Good luck!

Oh and you get smoked in your first ritual, come back here and we can talk you off the ledge (JOKE!!!)

You may want to start with a brief meditation. Just to have a peace of mind.

Your answer is right there friend.. as Alan Moore says "Art is Magic, and Magic is Art" continue honing your skills as an artists or as a crafter, introduce some esoteric symbolism to your craft, research those symbols, this in exchange will create the focus you need to practice magic, since that seems to be what you are lacking, and that is important in magical practice, but also imagination is extremely important as well, which is why focusing in a craft, in creative endeavors of any kind, are magical acts themselves...you don't need to repeat yourself after any ancient magical traditions, just get inspired and create your path... Look into Alan Moore, Austin Osman Spare and Robert Anton Wilson, these all will inspire you more on creating your own path.

I hear you. I've felt the same way. Many times.

Got it.

You're suffering from "disconnection".

On a personal note, I've been lost for quite some time in terms of what path to take and my focus is almost non-existent in terms of being able to get drawn into any of the books on the innumerous subjects within these circles of the occult and paranormal.

My vote? You need a path which cultivates "connection".

I'm very much a psychic brick/dud

FWIW, connection, most often, presents itself as a feeling.

those instincts are faint or dull

I identify it as "calloused". Like a finger-tip.

I wish I could believe or see what other see and feel

OK

I want to learn more, grow spiritually, and perfect my own personal craft, so all of this is what brought me here. I want to learn more from others and maybe find inspiration or a path that can lead me to better personal fulfillment/growth. Thanks to all who run this forum and are willing to share. Step one: heart work. What makes your heart go "pitter-pat"? Make a list for yourself ( please don't post it publicly , especially if it's personal or inappropriate ) Just a list, no descriptions, just an inventory. Do that first. If there's nothing on your list, the problem is mundane. Something tangential. It needs to be resolved before aspiring to anything beyond the material realm. Once you have somethings, plural, on your list, report back and we can talk about step two.
