What desktop cpu do ya’ll use?
What made you choose that model?
how well does it perform and what do you use it for?
Do you think it will last for quite a while?

tech is improving quite fast, it’s really intriguing and kind of confusing for someone who hasn’t had a desktop in nearly a decade, it’ll be a night and day difference.

perfect chance to show off your set up! Thanks!

I built a small, modern system inside a (recreation) Commodore 64 case a couple of years ago.

I'm not currently looking to build a new system but if I was I would probably go for 19" rackmount workstation with an AMD Threadripper or (if I won the lottery) an EPYC

If I won the lottery I wouldn’t say a word but there would be signs.. as in I’d have an insane pc setup by hand picked by our gracious moderator and see how much he’d charge annually to be an IT guy. My basement has been kinda poorly lit lately. Maybe a beacon of light would help it. IT knowledge is always useful.

But umm I keep pushing this off but sometime this week I’ll be posting my new computer, all the info and then y’all can scorch me for not spending a gajillion $’s more 😂

ontop of main post I was wondering if any of y’all played Counter-strike 2 or something comparable, if so what ram size, and gpu spec the more down to earth cost wise (2k or less) is better but I do like seeing some fancy set ups no matter the cost. 😎

My main has a Ryzen 9 3900X with 12 cores, 24 threads. It's not the fastest on single-thread performance, but it still manages well. For games one could do better with fewer but faster cores in the latest generation of processors. I'm a bit stuck for now as a newer CPU would necessitate a new motherboard and RAM, and I already have 64GB system RAM. It's come a long way from the laggy mess of the Ryzen 3 1300X I had installed on it six years ago. That's the nice thing about AMD at least, since a good motherboard can always get BIOS updates to handle newer generation CPUs as they come out for the same socket.

I've been playing Robocop Rouge City lately. My GPU handles it at high settings, but I have a feeling that a newer generation CPU would bring out another 20% performance from it. Still, with ray tracing, DLSS, and frame gen, it looks pretty good at 1440p on my OLED. Gotta love those Steam sales. The game cost less than a fast food lunch.

I use my computer mainly for graphics programming as a hobby and then for real programming for linux.
