This is the story of the enigmatic eighteenth-century sorcerer whose work still influences occultists today. Francis Barrett was the first magician since the middle ages to compile a manual or 'grimoire' of magick. His Magus or Celestial Intelligencer is probably only suprassed by Aleister Crowley's book Magick.

Francis King offers a fascinating picture of Francis Barrett, a man who lived on the frontier of technology, both in terms of the inner landscape and his pioneering experiments in balloon flight. The book discusses Barrett's teachers, peers, and the subsequent progress of his disciples. The Flying Sorcerer includes a previously unpublished Barrett manuscript on Crystal Vision, which was essential reading for the students of Barrett's magickal school.
