What plants are good to have in the house and which are not? I know 0 about herbalism, never bought a houseplant, never considered any ups and downs, but clearly it matters. I wonder if there is some lore to learn here.

The fresh kitchen herbs that you can buy in the supermarket have some surprising lore (in some cases at least). Sage, Basilicum and Mint are good for banishings for example.

Rosemary and Mugwort are excellent protectors, so have them where is good for you to protect. I have them near windows and doors, I also have Mugwort dried near doors as well.

I like plants associated with Venus and Jupiter in the South East corner of my home. If you wanted a reference of which plants are correspondence of which plantets, Culpeppers book is a great place to start.

As Yazata as mentioned herbs in general are excellent to have growing as there is always much need for them.

As much growth as possible is very good. So I tend to have them everywhere.

Spikey plants, such as cactus and succulents not so good in bedroom.

Let's differentiate between just having a plant in a pot and having the utility of fresh ingredient for working. Do you mean that sage, basil and mint are good for a ritual or good just to have as a houseplant?

Why are spikey plants and succulents not good for bedroom? Please elaborate on planetary correspondences, this is very interesting. Can you recommend some good book on that?

I'm not sure in terms of caring for them but I do have some advice. Plants are living beings and they aren't all as easy as just water and sunlight. Whatever plant you get be sure to read up on it. Some plants require certain ways of watering(orchids for example you give ice cubes and let them melt you dont straight up water them), certain types of soil, etc...and plants can get diseases too so be sure to know what common mistakes are made with the type of plant you get and how to spot such diseases. Like if a plant doesn't have enough calcium in the soil they may turn a certain color(can't recall what but plants don't just wilt there's usually ways to tell what the plant is lacking by color).

I don't take care of plants mainly because I don't have the time to read up on them and care for them properly. You can't usually just water a plant and give it sunlight and soil and expect it to survive well. You got to know what kind of soil how to water them how often how much sunlight do they require other stuff from you etc...

In regards to lore...learn up on the plant first and how they are cared for and what they can be used for. Learn as much as you can on their natural environment and how they interact with it Then you can develop your own associations. The stronger your relationship the more assocations. Peppers are spicy perhaps they can be used for baneful protection. Orchids need to cling to another plant perhaps they can represent unity. Etc

Here's and example...pine grows a lot everywhere where I live. I can develop a strong relationship knowing about the environment around the pine trees and sitting with it learning about them. Talking to them sitting under their shade thinking about them mediating. I often use pine for strength because of their trunks are strong and protection because of the pinecone being sharp. These associations come from my understanding of the plant and my experiences with them.

Having a connection and understanding of why you associate a plant with this and that why it can be used the way it is helps a lot.

Kitchen Herbs! Which is to say any herb you would use in the kitchen for cooking has a magickal use as well. Basil, Thyme, Rosemary, Parsley, Onions, Garlic, Chile Peppers (smaller species), Mint, Marjoram, Oregano, Coriander, Chives, Tarragon, Dill, Sage. The majority of these can be grown indoors using hydroponics and more advance modern methods. They'll make your house smell better and you can use them in spells, cooking, or herbal homeopathic remedies.

While I'm not Wiccan, there are two good books on herbs in magic that I have. Scott Cunningham's Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs and Amy Blackthorn's Blackthorn's Botanical Magic are good books on plants and available on this site.
I grow lots of herbs for cooking and don't really use them for magic but there are a lot of uses for them both magically and medicinally. Before the advent of modern healthcare, herbs were used to treat many conditions, but you can't patent a plant(except GMO's), so now they use chemicals that only cover up symptoms. These two books, and there are others, will give you some guidance on what plants to have in your house. They also help absorb odors and make your house smell nice.

All plants have abilities. It's common to use a cactus for protection, basil for abundance....

Check for classic associations and place the plants where it's more appropriate.

I never heard of any bad "plant", only bad feng shui.

You can awake the spirit of the plant. Feed him with extra offering (like good fertilizer or diluted tea/coffee) to empower its spirit and turn it into a real guardian/ally.

My personal association with that plant is also fertility, wealth, and longevity. In the desert it's one of the few plants that actually thrives and acts as mini oasis for smaller animals when water is scarce. You actually eat cactus if you can't find water in the desert and survive off that alone. As in any desert on this earth, moisture and water is practically gold, which cactus's have in abundance by mother natures design.
