Mantras for Healing the Six Sense Faculties

In Buddhist psychology, the “Six Faculties” refer to the six sense bases through which we experience the world:

  1. Eye (seeing)
  2. Ear (hearing)
  3. Nose (smelling)
  4. Tongue (taste and speech)
  5. Body (physical sensation)
  6. Mind (thoughts and emotions)
In traditional Mahāyāna practice, each faculty can be purified or strengthened through visualization and mantra recitation. The practitioner visualizes a specific Bodhisattva associated with that faculty while reciting the mantra.

These practices are devotional and contemplative in nature. They are not a substitute for medical care, but are meant to support healing and inner balance.

1. Eye Faculty – Vision

Visualize Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva radiating gentle light within your eyes.

Mantra:
Om Qin Xi Za Ye Svaha
嗡 沁嘻 杂耶 梭哈

Traditionally said to help reduce eye discomfort and purify visual perception.

2. Ear Faculty – Hearing

Visualize Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva present within your ears, clearing inner and outer noise.

Mantra:
Zhang A Ga Bei Ya Svaha
张 阿 噶贝呀 梭哈

Traditionally recited for ear pain and disturbances in hearing.

3. Nose Faculty – Smell

Visualize Guanyin Bodhisattva within the nasal passage, bringing clarity and calm.

Mantra:
Sha Ha Hum Bei Ma Ba Da Ma Svaha
啥 哈吽 贝玛拔大嘛 梭哈

Used traditionally to ease nasal discomfort.

4. Tongue Faculty – Taste & Speech

Visualize Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva resting upon the tongue, blessing speech and the mouth.

Mantra:
Zeng Gu Ru Ba Ni Sha Svaha
增 固如 巴尼啥 梭哈

Traditionally said to help relieve mouth-related ailments.

5. Body Faculty – Physical Sensation

Visualize Sarvanīvaraṇaviṣkambhin Bodhisattva pervading the whole body with light.

Mantra:
Ti Lin Sa Rang Ba Ya Svaha
悌林 萨让 拔呀 梭哈

Used traditionally to reduce bodily pain and discomfort.

6. Mind Faculty – Thoughts & Emotions

Visualize Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva seated in the heart-mind, radiating wisdom and clarity.

Mantra:
Meng Xi Ri A Rang Ga Ya Svaha
蒙 悉日 阿让噶呀 娑哈

Traditionally recited to ease mental suffering, anxiety, and emotional distress.

How to Practice

  • Sit comfortably with a straight spine.
  • Relax the breath.
  • Gently visualize the Bodhisattva associated with the faculty you wish to support.
  • Recite the mantra slowly, either aloud or silently, 21 or 108 times.
  • Conclude by resting quietly for a few moments.
