I have been studying taoist magic and came across a video by Benebell Wen about the Baopuzi and the Liu Jia mantra. I noticed she used hand mudras similar to the ninja mudras and I recall a book about them. Does anyone recall the source or have any information about the ninja mudras and their connection to the Liu Jia? Thank you!

If you're referring to the kuji-in, it originates from Shugendō. As for the shijū-gohōformation, it comes from the Baopuzi and was used for protection in the mountains, though I don’t remember the details. It was likely first employed by Onmyōdō, but later traditions like Shugendō also adopted it.

That was it, the kuji-in! I found a book by Francois Lepine about the kuji-in, and I was wondering how they relate. It seems the Liu Jie are Taoist in origin, while the Kuji-in are Buddhist. I am aware that there is a lot of porous interchange between the two especially where esoteric practice is concerned. It's interesting how the liu jie for self protection, which is slightly different (the last two characters change) is a general purpose practice, while the kuji-in is more specific in the use of each mudra.

I guess I should look into Shugendō for more info. Thank you
