From my experience on this forum, they usually make wild claims about flying, conquering pantheons of demons etc.
The equivalent of joining a roleplaying group and declaring "I AM ARES GOD OF WAR!!!" (Which happened to my wife when she was an admin)
Basically, if it looks like bollocks and the person refuses to give you straight answers, your bullshit detector is functioning correctly.
Most of them are unaware that any other pronoun exists besides the first-person singular. That and relentless one-upmanship. "Jesus cast out a couple of demons into a herd of swine and drowned 'em? BFD. Yesterday, I cast out a reinforced battalion of demons into a herd of elephants and pureed them possessed pachyderms!"
A lot of the charlatans out there are either mistaken, mentally ill, or con-men. The mistaken and ill are pretty easy to spot, someone of genuine accomplishment has grace, certainty, intelligence, etc, where as someone mistaken, when investigated or asked prodding questions, will wobble. The ill tune in & out of incoherency, paranoia, and detachment from reality, so if you can't spot the ramblings of an ill person when you see it, God help you.
The biggest concern is con-men, folk who want to make a buck off esoteric "well duh"'s and fear-mongering. Look for fad exploitation, ego-boosting, and references to other works a person has made in the past to convince you to buy more. A lack of references to other works/masters is a good red flag, so is a lack of genuine success in the material world. If you're unlucky enough to talk to a con-man, just look at how they react to anything that may question their authority or reputation. If they fear you looking behind the curtain, they're probably not an actual wizard
To discover some truth feels like remembering, you don't need to convince yourself of it, the truth is the truth, it's a unique and precious experience. Once you get a nack for recognizing what is real and what is delusion, it'll be easier to find the good shit.
