Easy start for Mudras
Mudras are sometimes only thought of as “hand gestures during meditation” but that’s incomplete.
A Mudra is a seal, in this sense it means to seal or “lock” the pranas
There are many different types of Mudras,
Eye Mudra’s,
Body Mudra’s
and
“Hasta Mudra’s” (aka hand Mudra”s)
I’ll be focusing more so on the hand Mudras because they can be used in different situations and for many different reasons.
For instance the Uttarabodhi mudra is often duplicated by political figures when giving an interview or sitting in a meeting, it can be used while speaking as where the Gyan Mudra often shown in stereotypical meditation practices.
Point being
Each Mudra has a purpose.
But Let’s get the basics.
Our finger tips are the points in which each elemental energy flows, for instance.
-Thumb - Fire
-Pointer - Air
-Middle - Ether
-Ring - Earth
-Pinky - Water
Gyan Mudra is arguably the most practiced Mudra.
It is the Mudra in which you softly place your thumb and pointer finger together in the form of a ring with your other 3 fingers sticking out. (Very similar to the diver’s “O.K.” Hand signal.
Gyan Mudra is most beneficial for Developing Concentration and helping focus.
Notice the fingers used are Fire, and Air with the other elements extended?
With Mudras you may begin to notice a pattern.
The Gyan Mudra is most often associated with meditation and one I’ve used to help focus on intent when charging a sigil, it especially helps with concentration and visualization.
Mudra’s are not all about increasing Prana flow, but rather balance, they can also be used to “decrease” (more so stabilize) the flow of certain Prana energy through circulation of more beneficial Prana needed.
Detail of each corresponding Element.
-Thumb - Fire
Fire Element - (Agni)
Confidence, passion and ability to get things done.
It is said that using Mudra’s focused on fire you can boost metabolism, regulate heart beat and increase energy.
-Pointer - Air
Air Element- (Prana)
Heart functioning/blood circulation.
-Middle - Ether
Ether/Space- (Udana)
Upper part of the body. For speaking, thinking and watching. In other wards Attentiveness and communication.
-Ring - Earth
Earth Element- (Apana) Force of Excretion, strength.
-Pinky - Water
Water Element- (Vyana) it is the Prana of Circulation, youthfulness.
Here is a small presentation that deals with mudras that affect your health…
Here is a picture of the Uttarabodhi mudra
The Gyan Mudra
Someone asked about the connection between mudras and chakras so I included this photo.
I hope this list helps provide you with some starting points on your mudra journey.
Bonus Mudra that works instantly, got it from yt.
Take a deep breath and keep in mind what that felt like,
Position your fingers as shown here
Now take a breath.
Much easier yes?
That one was Curtesy of yt combined with inhaling breath and extending your stomach and vice versa on the exhale, it comes in handy.
