The scholar Michael Saso went to Taiwan and studied for several years under a Zhengyi Daoist priest, eventually being ordained himself. The first part of this book looks at the master himself, including his family, the Daoist milieu in Taiwan, and his teaching style. The second part details his teachings. Over centuries the Zhengyi school absorbed various Daoist practices from around China and a modern master is expected to learn a pretty breathtaking array of rituals, music, magickal techniques, and all the theory that goes with it. While not exactly a how-to manual, Saso’s descriptions of the various practices, including thunder magic, meditations, and “the Tao of the Left” (sort of a Daoist goetia) give a level of detail unprecedented in English at the time this was published. Overall a great overview of what modern Zhengyi Daoist practice looks like.
