If you take a pic with someone, can you use it in ritual to establish a connection. And if you do, will that inadvertently affect you?

Yes, a photo can be used, but it's not needed. All that's needed is an accurate conception of the other individual in the mind, but lacking their consent the connection will be metaphorically to their back.

Almost everything you do affects you.

I'd say it depends. How you feel about something is very important in magick. If it bothers you in any way, then you shouldn't do it. I'd say that's the golden rule.
