Well, damn.
I'd been meaning for years to reach out to Lon and ask him what had happened to S. Jason Black - the pen name of David P. Wilson, whom I credit for giving me the kick to seat of pants when I needed it back in the 1990's.
Apparently he drank himself to death. I imagine it's rough going being devoted to the demon alcohol and a Byronic self-image as the naughty pirate or man about town. It catches up to you eventually.
