Or the story is made up or the “witches” are larping or the “shield” is faith and prayer based or you’re dealing with a egregore created by the collective majority, or more likely a collection of all of these things (and maybe even the efforts of some real magicians thrown into the mix).

Honestly haven’t spent anytime thinking about it.
