I recall Israel Regardie caused to be published the Golden Dawn materials because he "did not want the teachings to die." This always struck me as so disingenuous as to be suspect, if not insulting to the readers' intelligence. The time was, after all, just past the middle of the 20th century when interest in the occult was expanding like a 90's coffee-shop chain. Libraries were being ransacked for occultated occultism. So why publish the material, having previously agreed to keep it secret?

An ageing chiropractor saw a shot at his 15 minutes? Or did the wizard that was Izz really believe the teachings could be lost? Or are those who speak of "counterinitiation" and "transcendence below" right and this is a magickal psy-op? A way of diverting otherwise (possibly recalcitrant) talent into a magickally sterile tradition? Yeah, that last one is even more suspicion-mongering than the O9A, but it's a specter worth raising (if only to lay.)

Had he not, what are the odds that the teachings would have been lost? Or worse, not lost but kept private and elite? Who would have had access to it? What would they have done with it?

He basically open sourced the material.

What if he was told to do it? Told by who?

What if it was a proverbial “shedding of the skin” for the egregore that needed to happen?

Curious things to ponder.

The owner of an esoteric bookshop told me that by 1995 interest in the GD had collapsed. Perhaps Regardie saw that coming and wanted a coherent account published

That's a good a theory as any, I guess.

Crowley became angry at the Zodiac the Hebrew alphabet being released to the public.
Regardie was Crowleys student for a while. They had a turbulent relationship.
Did the two have a beef?
Maybe so.
