Morphic Fields and the role of Purpose

Rhea D'SouzaRhea D'Souza

"An act of creativity is the exploration of new meaning that is of value in the new and old contexts" - Amit Goswami (physicist)
For over two decades I have been fascinated by the phenomena of Morphic Fields. As a child I could often wonder how come some kids from a whole different part of the world have ‘similar’ play habits…was there a manual??

As I grew older and would travel for athletic meets and meet people from different parts of the country, from various socio economic background, and see that they would still do some stuff (habits) which were remarkably similar. Again.. was it TV?.

Why did most people feel a certain, similar way when they entered churches, temples or museums? How do people know how to be in a foreign country for the first time? - Who or what was telling them this? - Such questions confused and haunted me. And exasperated the people around me when I kept asking them.

In my 20’s I literally stumbled upon, (remembering Rainer’s..live the question till you stumble upon the answer one day), a talk by biologist, Rupert Sheldrake -a Talk which was ban, then. And listening to his theory of Morphogenetic Fields suddenly gave an answer to all these questions and something fell into place in my heart or mind.

So what is a Morphic field?

A Morphic field is an energy field that defines the entire biology of all living beings. It provides a force field that guides the development and behvaiour of an organism as it grows.
Morphic fields are reinforced by successive generations, and they are not fixed. They learn and evolve through “uploaded” behaviour and belief (conscious and unconscious) of the people (sounds a lot like AI, I presume). They work by imposing patterns on otherwise random or patterns of activity.

Over long periods of time these fields are inherited. Sheldrake proposes that they are transmitted from past members of the species/group through a kind of non-local resonance, called morphic resonance. Which transcends space and time.

Our body also has a morphic field. This field instructs the millions of cells in my body, what to do and how to be, how specifically to design - for me.

Each individual both draws upon and contributes to the collective memory of the group. This means that new patterns of behaviour can spread more rapidly than would otherwise be possible. – I can see Raising collective consciousness from a scientific lens.

This explains my disappointment with my hair. I would get exasperated that my hair would not grow like my friends, she had lovely curly hair. (I would argue that hair growing cells are hair growing cells after all). But now I know - It does not matter what I want. My cells takes instruction from my field- It gives them a context.

So where is all this going??

Sometimes for reasons not know, the cells lose contact with this morphic field and suddenly lose touch with context and don't know what to do, it's like the compass taken away. They are lost. In the absence of a guiding compass, cells regress to a primitive memory and behaviour pattern and start multiplying. They just keep growing mindlessly. Till they eventually collapse the body that supported them (think Cancer). They forget who they are, and why there are.

Growth without context can be self defeating.
If we substitute ‘cells’ with organizations. This description still holds true.

The morphic field easily can also be referred to as the Purpose. the reason, the why, for an organism to exist.
An Organization is also a living organism.

Over the last couple of decades we have seen organizations that were thriving. And very soon for some reason lose connect with its Purpose and start multiplying and growing aimlessly.

Till, It starts attacking and collapsing the very system that gave birth and supported it. Until it dies. We have witnessed tragic deaths of many great organizations, that lost touch with its Purpose.

It’s biology not so much psychology then.
If we see, and relate with organizations as a living being, with a morphic field, a purpose , an immune system, a soul - every person entering that field(like the cells) IS contributing (not just can) towards strengthening or weakening this field.

In an organisational context, the disconnection with the field is apparent in some of the ‘comments’ people share.

What does one do?

This is where Leadership comes in.

I believe, Leaders have THREE big Roles to play:

Support the Organizations soul to serve its purpose in the world.
Support the people to serve their Purpose in the organization.
And MOST importantly Create a bridge between the two.
Everything else is a - HOW.

Listening and empathy therefore become a very important capability for this. .

The symptoms are there. If we listen to the comments - People saying:

I feel lost
I don't know why I am here
I just come
  • I just come to do my job and go
  • I don't find meaning
  • Feel disconnected
  • I am getting the results, the awards – but why am I not happy?
  • I don't feel safe here
When these things happen they often affect the organizations immunity. And like any living being, if the systems immunity becomes weak any small infection will cause a huge reaction, and put the whole system at risk.

On the contrary if the people are connected to their purpose and the organization purpose – they become strong and withstand external pressure together, or infection.

The solution to the VUCA world is, strong connection to Purpose.

This is certainly not a one time activity. Organizations and people are never static. And so one has to keep reconnecting and reminding each other of our purpose. To build healthy workplaces and societies which give BOTH Meaning and Membership to its people.

Morphic fields: What are and “Reading from Morphic fields” method

British biologist Ruper Sheldrake developed the theory of morphic (morphogenetic) fields in the 1980s, according to which human consciousness is connected to an invisible collective information field that he called the morphic field.

    What are morphic fields?

Morphic fields are energy fields that underlie human mental activity and perception which contain all information about human beings, animals and the entire nature, independent of time and space.

Discovery and confirmation of the existence of morphic fields

The existence of these fields was proven, among other things, through the “101 Monkeys” experiment, which took place in 1952 on a Japanese island. A group of scientists experimented on a species of brown monkeys by throwing them sweet potatoes to eat on the shore of an island.

The monkeys liked to eat the sweet potatoes, but they did not enjoy the fact that the potatoes, which they had to collect from the beach, were full of sand, which made the potatoes taste bitter. One day, the baby monkey went to a nearby stream and washed the potatoes from the sand. That action was recognized and taken over by the cub’s mother and then by all the other monkeys on that island.
Over the next six years, all the monkeys on that island learned how to wash potatoes. An astonishing experience was that after some time, the monkeys from the neighbouring island suddenly started washing the potatoes even though they had no contact with the group of monkeys that initially started to do it.
In one day, the consciousness of members of one species expanded and transmitted new knowledge to all members of that species.
Ken Keyes called this phenomenon of an evolutionary leap in the development of collective consciousness “the phenomenon of the hundredth monkey”, symbolically explaining that the critical amount of knowledge among the members of one species represents “99 monkeys”, and when the “hundredth monkey” finally becomes aware, the knowledge is instantly spread among to all members of the species, without any contact between them.
Morphic fields of social groups connect group members even when they are many kilometres apart, providing channels of communication through which organisms can stay in contact at a distance. This phenomenon, as it were, connects science with spirituality and allows us to confirm a fact known thousands of years ago, which is that everything in the Universe is connected to everything.

    Natural morphic fields

Natural morphic fields, which represent a source of nature, have their characteristics reflected in their balanced state. These fields serve to support and develop their members, focusing on self-sustainability and self-regulation. They possess consciousness and energy directed towards the support and development of individuals, similar to what can be seen in the animal world in various forms.

  • null

    Metaprocess morphic fields

On the other hand, Metaprocess morphic fields exist only in humans because we are the only members of the community who possess the ability of metaprocessing, thinking, and self-awareness. These fields are a result of the thinking process. In the human environment, such fields often tend to drain the energy of their members, neglecting their needs. In such fields, pyramid power structures, conflicts, and polarization often occur.
It is easy to observe various companies, corporations, political parties, institutions, and other human creations to understand that there is an imbalance, a lack of energy, and constant conflicts among the members in these fields.
What characterizes natural morphic fields and sets them apart from unnatural fields is the intention that exists in those fields. In unbalanced fields, the intention is focused on proving something to someone, on a sense of security and acceptance in the external environment.
In natural morphic fields, the intention is always a product of originality and is not related to a sense of security, acceptance, or proving oneself in the external world.

    Morphic family field

One example of a natural morphic field is the family field, which represents the foundation of all relationships and should be balanced and functional according to natural laws. However, it can be noticed that such fields are often dysfunctional and abound in conflicts and disagreements.
As individuals, our task is to develop and maintain balance in our family field in order to influence the growth and development of the members of that community, especially our children, in the best possible way. The first step is awakening the awareness of individuals within those fields, which will primarily contribute to creating functional and balanced members, thereby leading to changes at the environmental level and further expansion of collective consciousness.

    Morphic fields and spirituality

Morphic fields and spirituality are two concepts that are often connected and explored in the context of human consciousness and collective experience. Morphic fields, according to the theory of British biologist Rupert Sheldrake, are invisible energetic fields that encompass all living organisms and phenomena in nature. They are considered carriers of information and memories that are passed down from generation to generation.
Spirituality, on the other hand, refers to the search for deeper meaning and connection to something greater than oneself. It is an individual and subjective path of exploring the inner world, transcendence, and connection to universal consciousness or the spiritual dimension of existence.
When these two concepts are connected, it can be explored how spiritual practices, such as meditation, prayer, contemplation, or self-reflection, can influence morphic fields. Many believe that through spiritual work, a connection can be established with collective consciousness, connecting with universal wisdom and energy, and contributing to the development and transformation of morphic fields in a positive way.
Spirituality can serve as a path to releasing limiting patterns and beliefs that may be present in morphic fields. Through inner work and raising the level of consciousness, individuals can contribute to building more balanced, harmonious, and compassionate fields around them.
Additionally, spirituality can foster and develop empathy, compassion, and connection with others, which can have a positive impact on morphic fields. When more individuals engage in spiritual development and work on inner growth, a synergistic effect can be achieved at a collective level.
It is important to note that these concepts remain subjects of research and different interpretations. Everyone can have their unique experience and understanding of the connection between morphic fields and spirituality. What is crucial is that these explorations and practices can contribute to the development of a deeper connection with the universe,

    The use of morphic fields

The use of morphic fields can be understood in several ways, depending on the context and interpretation. Here are a few approaches:
Conscious energy directing: It is believed that morphic fields possess an energetic component. You can use visualization techniques and intention to direct energy towards a specific goal or purpose. For example, you can imagine sending love, healing, or positive intention to a particular person or situation.
Synchronization with collective consciousness: Morphic fields are connected to collective consciousness and collective experience. Through spiritual practice, meditation, or prayer, you can connect with these fields and contribute to their development and transformation. This may involve personal growth, raising awareness, practicing empathy, and kindness towards others.
Transmission of information and experiences: Morphic fields are also considered carriers of information and memory. You can use this idea to access deeper knowledge or intuition through meditation, introspection, or contemplation. Sometimes, through such practices, “channeling” of information or intuitive understanding that comes from morphic fields can occur.
Creating positive fields around oneself: You can contribute to creating a positive and harmonious environment around you. This can involve actions at an individual level, such as personal transformation, developing kindness, empathy, and attentiveness towards others. Additionally, group activities like meditation, prayer, or collective focusing on specific intentions can create positive effects on morphic fields.

It is important to note that these approaches are not scientifically confirmed and can vary in different spiritual traditions and interpretations. It is always important to develop your own understanding and use techniques that resonate with you on an individual level.

Morphic fields / Morphogenetic fields

Morphic fields, also known as morphogenetic fields, are invisible fields of information that act as an organising force for biological, mental and social structures. They are said to be responsible for how organisms develop and communicate with each other, how memories are formed and how collective behaviour patterns are established.

The concept of morphic fields was developed primarily by British biologist Rupert Sheldrake. It is an alternative explanatory model for phenomena that cannot be adequately explained by classical biology, genetics or neurophysiology – such as the instinctive behaviour of animals, spontaneous healing processes or synchronicity within social groups.

Origin and background of the term

The term ‘morphogenetic field’ originally comes from embryology, where it was used to describe the force fields that control the development of an organism’s form. Sheldrake extended this idea to all biological and mental processes and called them morphic fields. According to his hypothesis, these fields operate outside of space and time and store experiences, forms and behavioural patterns, which can then be transferred as a blueprint to other organisms or systems.

Basic principles of morphic fields

The concept is based on several key assumptions:
  • Formative fields: Morphic fields contain information that is not contained in matter itself, but rather organises it.
  • Memory of nature: Fields contain a collective memory that is reinforced through repetition – a principle that Sheldrake refers to as ‘morphic resonance’.
  • Non-locality: The effect of the fields is independent of space and time, which shows parallels to quantum physics and non-local information transfer.
  • Collective influence: Behaviour patterns that are repeated frequently become more accessible to others – for example, in learning effects, trends or group behaviour.

Areas of application and significance in holistic medicine

Morphic fields play an important role in regulative medicine and energy healing, as they provide an explanation for how information and order enter living systems. Their significance is evident in the following areas, among others:
  • Information medicine: Use of fields for targeted information transfer within the body.
  • Energy medicine: Assumption that morphic fields are connected to subtle energy fields (such as auras or chakras).
  • Homeopathy and bioresonance: transmission of information that is not materially measurable but biologically effective.
  • Systemic constellations: An explanatory approach to the impact of family or organisational fields, which can have an effect across generations.
  • Collective learning: When a new skill is learned by a group, it becomes easier for others – even in other locations – to develop it as well.

Criticism and academic discussion

The concept of morphic fields is scientifically controversial. Critics argue that there is no clear experimental evidence for the existence of such fields and that Sheldrake’s theories lie outside the established scientific paradigm.
Proponents, on the other hand, argue that many biological and psychological phenomena cannot be adequately explained without such models. In quantum biology, systemic therapy and consciousness research in particular, there are increasing points of contact with this theory.

Parallels to quantum physics and information medicine

Morphic fields show interesting overlaps with concepts from quantum physics, such as quantum entanglement and non-locality. The idea that information exists independently of matter and can influence systems is also a central component of information medicine.
For this reason, many holistic therapists and practitioners in energy medicine use the model of morphic fields as a basis for explaining intuitive diagnoses, spontaneous healing processes or energetic healing methods.

Conclusion

Morphic fields or morphogenetic fields are a fascinating model that describes order, memory and development in living systems beyond purely material explanations. In regulative medicine, they serve as the basis for many energetic and information medicine procedures that aim to impart impulses of order into the human system – with the goal of promoting healing, balance and self-regulation. Although not yet fully recognised by science, morphic fields offer a powerful model for connecting biology, consciousness and healing.

SYSTEMIC CONSTELLATION WORK

What is the Morphogenetic Field?

Morphogenetic-1-1024x394.jpg

“Natural systems, or morphic units, at all levels of complexity — atoms, molecules, crystals, cells, tissues, organs, organisms, and societies of organisms — are animated, organized, and coordinated by morphic fields, which contain an inherent memory. Natural systems inherit this collective memory from all previous things of their kind by a process called morphic resonance, with the result that patterns of development and behavior become increasingly habitual through repetition. There is a continuous spectrum of morphic fields, including morphogenetic fields, behavioral fields, mental fields, and social and cultural fields.”

~ Rubert Sheldrake

Rupert Sheldrake talks about morphogenetic fields (or M-fields) as invisible organizing patterns that act like energy templates to establish forms on various levels of life, eg: when Sir Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile, he created a new M-field.
The belief system prevailing in human consciousness had been that the 4-minute mile was a limit of human possibility. Once the new M-field was created, many runners suddenly began to run sub-4 minute miles. This occurs every time mankind breaks into a new paradigm, whether it’s the capacity to fly (an M-field created by the Wright Brothers), or the capacity to recover from alcoholism (an M-field created by Bill W., the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous). Once an M-field is created, everyone who repeats the accomplishment reinforces its power. Once it’s created, it exists as a universally available pattern throughout the invisible universe. (David Hawkins 1995 )
When we set up your Constellation, we are setting up the M-fields that you are entangled in and living in as your reality. What a Constellation does is reveal these old M-fields of limitation, the stuck energies and patterns, so that we are now conscious of these energies and dynamics in our field and their source. The source may be with your ancestor’s past lives, prenatal, early childhood, adulthood, the collective group or tribe, and your own personal emotional and physical traumas from any time-space. Once we are conscious, we can create new M-fields that no longer continue these old painful and limiting patterns. We begin to create M-fields in alignment with an even greater field that Hellinger calls Spirit-Mind. In a (family) system, we are always in touch with this Morphogenetic Field or Knowing field, and we feel the whole field. Usually, we are not aware of the fact that we are in touch with everything and that everything is in touch with us. The (family) system is bigger, greater, and older, and we are unconsciously subjected to it.

The 100th Monkey
A story about social change.
By Ken Keyes Jr.
The Japanese monkey, Macaca Fuscata, had been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years.
In 1952, on the island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkey liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant.
An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers too.
This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists. Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable. Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.
Then something startling took place. In the autumn of 1958, a certain number of Koshima monkeys were washing sweet potatoes — the exact number is not known. Let us suppose that when the sun rose one morning there were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their sweet potatoes. Let’s further suppose that later that morning, the hundredth monkey learned to wash potatoes.

THEN IT HAPPENED!

By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet potatoes before eating them. The added energy of this hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough!
But notice: A most surprising thing observed by these scientists was that the habit of washing sweet potatoes then jumped over the sea…Colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop of monkeys at Takasakiyama began washing their sweet potatoes.
Thus, when a certain critical number achieves an awareness, this new awareness may be communicated from mind to mind.
Although the exact number may vary, this Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon means that when only a limited number of people know of a new way, it may remain the conscious property of these people.
But there is a point at which if only one more person tunes-in to a new awareness, a field is strengthened so that this awareness is picked up by almost everyone!
From the book “The Hundredth Monkey” by Ken Keyes, Jr.

The OP asked for book recommendations, not an overlong discussion of morphic fields. So would you recommend “The Hundredth Monkey” by Ken Keyes, Jr.? The Rhea D'Souza text doesn't count as it's an article. Everybody here is probably aware of Sheldrake's theories, would you like to recommend a specific book?
