I’ll leave out specific details of my practice but I have made spirit contact and have good relationships with ancestors and house spirits, created protective servitors, so my defenses are quite strong when I am practicing frequently. I decided that since I had reached an intermediate skill level I would try to reach out and contact a darker entity- not naming it- and ask for material career advancement and money to fund a pilgrimage to my ancestral homeland. I believed since it was a somewhat noble cause I was doing something morally grey rather than evil.
My offering was sex magic channeled into a sigil and burned in the presence of the entity.
The contact was subtle, and I wasn’t sure if what I had done had really “done anything” so to speak.

About a month or two later, I was promoted twice in the span of a month, a position that I barely had time to train for and didn’t think would become available.
The reason I was able to advance so quickly? The person who previously had that position caught an illness, which caused a disability they already had to flare up so severely that they were unable to work.

I did not wish them harm.

Part of me wants to just say it’s all a coincidence but the synchronicities just line up too well.

I did my protections. I was very specific about what I wanted. I didnt consider that "vacancy" might actually hurt someone else. I assumed any backfire or consequences would hit me.

Question for people who walk this path: Is this how it works? Does something always collapse for someone else to clear space for you? Did I do something incorrect or do you just have to be a psychopath to choose this path? or does the path make you one?

Genuinely asking. No judgement.

No, that isn’t how it works. Things don’t just collapse to create space for you. When you’re working with a very dark entity, you need to be explicit and specific about the details.

Since you don’t want to change companies, career advancement would mean moving into a higher role within the same company. Which realistically means taking a position someone else currently holds. Because of that, alongside your requests you should add something like “with no harm done to me and others.”

You might also want to check in on the person whose illness has flared up.

Since I made this post I have checked up on them, and done healing and protective work for them. They said that since they left they are doing much better, and that they are actually glad that they left the job and have found something that makes them happier. So the guilt has dissipated, and I have taken this as a lesson about being intentional about protecting those around me as well.

Nice tale, especially adding that the person you replaced is better off as they are now.

That is usually what happens. When we manipulate the world through the magic, our goal is still reached by natural ways, the ones that are possible. Long sickness, well, taken from perspective of another person, they get sick if they do not take care of themselves right and need change. (not to be considered a common reason, okay? It is part of it, but germs are REAL) Other person is a pile of shit and when it finally gets to them you might not know anything but that the person got fired.

You said dark god, not an evil god. Is there even such a god? I don't really believe that much, because such god would not be well accepted among other gods. Such presence would cause spiritual war, something that would have truly terrible consequences. I won't go into theories of those, don't want to feed imagination of snake-oil vendors.

Dark gods can be very good beings, just more capable of pushing what needs to be done, in my opinion. Bad deeds can have many good consequences, good deeds can cause many bad things to happen. That's how it is, good and evil are subjective. What is good for one, can be bad for another. And when doing occult, you are working with the unknown. @Keldan is right, that it is worth being specific about things, but also on the other hand the thing still needs to be possible to be done. Spirits can find ways that you do not know about and will have their reason why they do what they do. And sometimes it is scary what happens, because you do not know why it was done, except that it was done for you...
