Syncretism vs. “Purist” Practice in Ceremonial Magic

I hope you are all doing well. I wanted to ask something out of curiosity: how much syncretism do you include in your own magical practice?


Do you tend to combine elements from different traditions, systems, or frameworks, or do you prefer to keep your practice more “purist” and work within one tradition as closely as possible?


For those of you who do use syncretism, how has it worked for you in practice? Have you found it useful, difficult, effective, confusing, or something else entirely?


I am not asking to judge anyone’s approach; I am genuinely curious about how different practitioners handle this in their own work.

True. Though once formed, it becomes single whole that becomes it's own unique system. If it is complete enough, practiced by more people and especially for generations, it has egregore that people can tap into, I assume.

Just an observation. I'm not actually sure where I stand in that matter myself.

Yep, that makes sense. I probably used “purist” too loosely. I agree that ceremonial magic has always been syncretic to some degree.


I guess what I meant was more about personal practice: do people usually stay within one established system, even if that system is already syncretic, or do they freely combine different systems themselves?


@Morell point is interesting too. At some point, if a synthesis becomes coherent and is practiced long enough, it starts to become its own tradition rather than just a mixture.


So I suppose I’m more curious about how people decide what fits together and what does not in actual practice.

Trial and error. The best way: not to guess or decide, but to try it out, preferably in small dose, and see.
