Literally 20th century, although there are charts that keep going into the 21st.
Do you mean 21st century? Or do you literally mean 1900-2000? My knowledge of processed foods is only really from the very late 20th century (like 90s) and mostly from 2000 onwards.

How does watercress rank as a health food in small amounts, if you know? Only info I can find online goes off serving sizes of one cup or more, which seems like too much for one meal the way I prepare it. But I’ve got a plant I started from seed that’s now very happy and productive, so I’ve been cramming that into whatever I can. It’s one of the few things that’ll thrive in this godforsaken swamp, along with my moringa tree and the Malabar spinach. (Isn’t it a cruel twist of irony that the only foods I succeed at growing, are the ones my family won’t touch?)

It seems pretty nutritious. It's not something that interests me too much though.

I found myself that i cant eat any food at all!
And started to eat only fruits kind of diet
Beside of that
My main dishes is
Nuts,fruits,green tea and black bread,
And no 'any"junk food at all this includes fastfoods and chips and soft drinks...
The reason i do that because what i had in mind was
You are what you eat,
And this diet gave me mental clarity and focus and even i do fasting somtimes and eat nothing for days or hours and i like
overal light feeling in general and loosingweight as well...

Years of sedantry lifestyle has made me quite the chonker, I'm afraid to admit.

I don't eat a lot, but when I do it it's to make me feel better, so a lot of comfort food, and junk food. Even when I cook for myself I use a lot of oil and butter and shit. Tastes too good.

I used to run, but these days it's too hot, so I've started indoor rowing, which I supplement with some weight training. Nothing crazy, just enough to stay somewhat fit and capable.

But diet really is the key to weight loss, so I'd appreciate any diet tips, inspiration, meal prep plans etc.

It might be a less popular opinion for some, but to be honest, I'm not really into any type of diet.

You gain weight because you eat more than what you should, or/and because you choose less healthy foods, for example as you said, junk food. There is a more solid way for weight loss without sticking strictly to any type of diet - which can put pressure on you and make you fail sooner before you could reach your goal -. This particular one can be a little bit slower process depending on your body type, but less challenging.

The key is: Eat as much as you always should have do.
You don't have to leave behind every type of food you like. It's about paying attention to what you're eating, make your meals more consciously, and do not consume too much of those type of foods which contains too much calory, but have no proper nutritional value - like drinks with sugar, sweetmeats, chips etc. - , in other words, eat as much as you have to, keep your calory input in the same level where it originally should be - not less - and if you can, eat more times /day, but small meals. This will help your body to digesti faster and more efficiently and after a while, your stomach gets used to not taking in too much food, in this way you simply have no appetite for more.

It'll help you to lose weight, simply because you will not consume as much food as you did before, and if you are manage to insert any type of sport into your life, you can be sure that your weight loss will happen, without too much stress, which can actually make people to eat more and less healthy foods or crave for it, making the diet a living Hell.

No need to rush, so leave behind your strict expectations too. Losing weight slowly even better for your body and gives it time to adapt some way or another the small but constant weight loss. I'm telling this not because "I've heard that it worked to somebody and that somebody's friend too" but because it worked for me.

I've never really been "fat", but I definitely had some problem with my body and I wanted a kind of change. I gave chances to different type of diets, but I realized that I don't like these "rules", there has to be an another way, then I found it: just eat the way I should do before. In my case, it was more about the amount of coke and energy drink I consumed instead of food, but feeding my body properly and leaving unnecessary calories behind helped, I didn't consume less than I should, I consumed as much as I had to, from the beginning, and of the right food.
You even might be in the same boat like I am and this process can be faster than you'd expect. I lose weight easily, gain muscle much more faster than an avarage person, but as a con, I lose it very fast if I stop working out. Everything balanced, as all things should be. sniff-sniff

I also suggest to try to find a sport which is the most fitting to you, and which interests you the most, what you could enjoy. Not what is the most "effective". The most visible progress you'll reach is with the one you can do and willing to do. I prefer to do weight lifting and own-weight centered workouts. it helps me to drive out the accumulated energy I could not.

Yeah, you're right.

And for me as well, I actually genuinely eat only as much as I need to... but the health killer is coke/soda/fizzy drinks. Holy fuck man, I wouldn't say I'm addicted, but if I have some at home, and I'm about to eat something spicy/savory... that shit's just too good. That + chocolates are definitely the main things I need to cut out, cause the rest of the food I eat is relatively healthy and of small portions. Oh and the insane amount of butter I use... If I cook ever meal at home, I would genuinely go through about 1KG of butter a month. Not that butter is inherently unhealthy, but it just makes the calorie count of my relatively small portions into something that would resemble a larger portion.

I'm this way with Pepsi. I've actually done cocaine (in the distant past), but at the end of the day it's Pepsi I crave. I try not to buy it, but I've backslid lately. I went a year or two without any soda at all and was much healthier for it. Some people turn immediately to alcohol when stressed. I like to drink lots of Pepsi. :/

Dr. Pepper, A&W Root Beer, Pepsi (prefer over coke) and Coke are my guilty pleasures.

I used to like monster and red bull as well, but I've drank so much of it while working that subconsciously I can't enjoy it anymore.

But yeah... it's a combo of the taste, the fizzyness and the acidity...

I actually very rarely drink fizzy drinks unless I am eating something. It's just something about the palate cleanzing fizzy, acidic refresher that just makes food keep tasting good after the first few bites.

Recently, mainly after Jazz's suggestion, I've been trying just regular club soda (carbonated water with no sugar) with a little bit of lime/lemon juice mixed in, and it's almost a perfect substitute... But after all these years of enjoying them, I still crave the other stuff.

God damn, that reminds me, when I was in uni, like one of my staple meals would be:
  • Dr Pepper/Root beer
  • pork scratchings/rinds
  • beef jerky
  • mexicana cheese
  • a twinkie for dessert
I would eat a little, but they are all so calorie dense... but damn that shit tasted so good...

I swear I've spoiled my taste buds and ruined normal food for myself.

Yes, I can tell the same. It is hard to name when you are becoming addicted to something. You might know the situation when you telling to everyone that "I could stop doing it any time!", but we all know that this "any time" won't come, in spite that you see how unhealthy is what you're doing.
I think that carbonated drinks are one of my few possible addictions - alongside with gaming and spirit sex, but I think currently I can take control over these, at least for now - which are definitely unhealthy.

I do consume coke still, but swapped to sugar free ones. I can tell the difference is pretty much visible in terms of calorie intake, but the thing is that from a certain point, I stopped drinking that much of it. In fact, I am the one who buy these, but my brother is the actualy "victim" of this action or I'd even say "habit", as he is the one who drinks the 80% of everything I bring home, so technically I'm working against my poor fella ( he is a grown man, so I will not consider myself as the only responsible here, but if I'd decide to focus on more healthy stuffs, he'd have no choice anyways, as I am the one who pays for everything ).
Nowadays, I don't really have the "apetite" to drink them. I buy them, bring them into my room, and at the very end of the day, I drink for about 3 times of it, and the rest goes to my brother.

Unfortunately it also indicates something unhealthy: I am pretty much, dehydrated. I reached a point when I drink water two times / a day - it may seems nothing to you but actully it wasn't a thing before at all, while long ago I drink 3 / 4L water / day -, and some gulp coke, plus my 0,5L energy drink, and that's all. This is definitely not working for my health, but for now, I consider myself healthy.

Also, I stopped counting my weight when I get into working out harder, and during the months, started to lose fat, and build more muscle, which's weight is heavier than fat, and your built / body type also matters a lot. I realized that what matters is how you look in the mirror, and not what the scale says and it straight can demotivate many people.

I lost 40 lbs cutting out soda and switching to a plant based diet. Doing this also got rid of the acne I had on my back. I enjoy being a vegan because I don't want anything to do with making animals suffer and it makes me feel "lighter."

If you can commit to this I would recommend getting the veganomicon and the everything easy vegan cookbook.

Just be sure you take a multivitamin every day though. I had a cancer scare not to long ago. The doc thought I had luekemia because my gums would constant bleed and I was bruising super easy. Turns out it was an iron and b12 deficiency. After I got that sorted out everything has been great.

The best way to lose weight is through fasting, but not everyday. If you restrict calories on a daily basis, especially severely, eventually you will drop your set point basal metabolism.

If you only have a few pounds to lose or you wish to maintain your weight while reaping anti-aging benefits, you can water fast (or zero calorie beverages) for 22-24 hours once a week. If you have a significant amount of weight to loss, fast on two non-consecutive days a week. It is important that the days are not consecutive.

Fiber that occurs naturally within food is very important. If you just focused on eating a lot of fiber (not added fiber or supplements), cut out sugary beverages, you would likely lose weight too.

Hunter-gatherers typically consume 100 grams a day of fiber, while Americans consume less the 20 grams.

When people "lose weight," what they're really doing is going on a high fat diet. This high fat diet is composed of stored body fats. Body fat doesn't just "melt away" but must be allowed to leave the liver and other storage locations on the body through hormonal action. The chief storage hormone is insulin. The easiest way to lower insulin is by fasting, as @Frater Dag said. Stored fat will be released to be burned as fuel in the mitochondria of most cells in the body. A long term approach to weight loss will include intermittent fasting and ideally very little fructose (cane sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, honey) in the foods eaten. Unfortunately, the more out of whack one's metabolism has gotten by eating the food-like-products of the industrial world, the harder it can be to get the body back into balance.

I once lost a lot of weight on a low fat, mostly vegan diet. It took almost religious dedication to keep up with that level of restriction.

I once lost weight eating a high fat, moderate protein, low carb diet. This was relatively easy to do. I still had to battle with my sweet tooth.

I now eat a 'balanced' diet, usually two meals a day, and I'm in good shape. I walk about 100 miles each month with some short runs in the mix. I enjoy some sweets, but not too much. I enjoy some alcohol, but not too much. I love fatty meat, and I love white Basmati rice.

My martial arts hero fitness action plan:
No processed food
No white stuff - salt, sugar, flour, milk
No white potatoes
No yellow stuff except for sweet potatoes (they matabolize differently)
No tropical fruit
Lean meat only. Size of hand.
Plenty of green stuff the size of your fist

Exercise:
Take a deck of playing cards. Jacks count 15, queens 20, kings 25.
Shuffle thoroughly
Decide on trump's, ie
Spades - burpees
Diamonds - mountain climbers
Clubs - pushups
Hearts - crunches

Start flipping cards and do that nber. No pause in between.
First week - one round of cards
second two rounds and so on.

One gallon of water a day.

I know, right? I was on that for four months and then roller coastered, however work did play a huge role in that.

I am huge into fittness. People ask me how I got fit... one word COMMITMENT. I am happy to answer any questions about fittness, but ultimately you have to choose what's more important.

I'm afraid I gained a lot of weight during the pandemic.

As far as diet, I will echo what someone said about processed food. Not only were they fatty, but they were salty and contributing to high blood pressure. My doctor told me if it was something that they wouldn't recognize as food 100 years ago, don't eat it (that includes most junk food and sugary drinks).

So I am eating eggs and lean meat, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lentils and pulses, and a little yogurt and small amounts of cheese.

For a treat, I drink a glass of red wine every night and some dark chocolates.

Forget about diets, think about changing your lifestyle.
Because diets are "short bursts" you do to lose a lot of weight at once, but this isn't healthy at the long run and it might not work as well as you think.

It is common for many to get back the weight they lost after a diet.
Your focus should be on changing your lifestyle, something more slow and controled, but that will endure the rest of your life.

I did so by starting IF(intermittent fasting) 2 years ago.I did not exercise(much) but through IF alone(and drinking the appropriate amount of water for my body weight) I lost +or- 10kg.
And since this is part of my lifestyle, I've learned to not overindulge with food, just eat what is necessary to feel moderately satiated but not full.

Recently I started to focus on developing calisthenics skills and doing more functional training in order to firstly, develop a healthy body that will last my whole life, and secondly, develop the type of physique I want.

So yeah, you have to change your lifestyle in order to have it work for you.
Just remember, not everyone can or should do IF, always check with a doctor if you're able to do it, specially if you take medicine.
