There are countless explanations in books and online. But I want to know what do you personally consider black magick to be in regard to your own practice?

Is it more just baneful spells/curses/hexes?
Is it more about working with demons?

Then once you’ve defined it for your own practice…
Do you practice only black magick Or do you only occasionally incorporate it into your practice?

I plan on chiming in later with some of my own ideas but I wanna hear from ya’ll!

Really curious about the community's responses.

I personally don't recognize objective morality or dualism but that's a philosophical stance and may not be the reality. So black magic in my world is "anything that makes me, personally, feel bad when I do it".

Very interesting response!
So in the context of your own magickal practice what would be an example of black Magick?
Or based on your definition, do you completely avoid it?

I wouldn't focus on isolated acts of black magic so much, rather on the mindset of black magicians, just like sinning doesn't make one a dyed-in-the-wool obstinate sinner in religious systems, or just like committing a crime once doesn't necessarily make one a career criminal.

For me, a black magician is someone who habitually and consciously seeks to dominate other persons and deliberately chooses to use injurious magical methods like animal sacrifice when less harmful means would have sufficed. Such a black magician would be perfectly capable of performing white (or whatever colour) magic like healing if necessary but in the main, his aim is to institute a reign of terror within a relationship, as a family patriarch, a cult leader, or a political dictator.

The cliché of the evil black sorcerer living alone in a house in the woods and performing unspeakable rituals each and every night is irrelevant here - if a person likes to get his jollies that way, it's nobody's business, I'd say. Whom I mean by 'black sorcerers' would be magicians who'll insist on meddling in other persons' affairs for their own ends, control freaks ever intent on enlarging their circle of influence who are chronically unable to let things slide and take their own course.

Seeking to dominate others for selfish reasons would be my definition of black magic then. You can argue about the ethics of single instances of cursing or person-specific love spells all day long but what I would rather mean in this reply are black magical acts of habitual offenders who are hoarders of bad karma, so to speak.

what do you personally consider black magick to be in regard to your own practice?
Using the language that makes the most sense to me, I see Black Magic as working with Maya. This has to do with the use of manipulation, of charm, curses, reality manipulation, getting the forces of illusion to work to your benefit specifically for gain within the realm of Maya; this has to do with attaining worldly success, of indulging desires, getting plans to fruition. The world of action happens because of Maya, it's what perpetuates all movement and all narrative. Maya exists on many levels too dimensionally, that is how demonic invocation can be done from my understanding, because these other-dimensional-entities are still playing the game of Maya, and to the skilled Black Magician, that makes them a song, and the Magician's will a piano keyboard. Just like a musician, however, the best are ones who become trapped by the very songs they're playing, they merge with it. That's not my vibe.

If it is to gratify you, to gain something, to dominate or destroy, it's Black Magic in my eyes. Almost everyone is a Black Magician to some degree, even those who are on the early stages to the RHP, it's just that few ever get any good at wielding it, especially esoterically. Simple mundane manipulation is just the surface layer to deep processes that have roots in magic.
Do you practice only black magick Or do you only occasionally incorporate it into your practice?
I practice Black Magic to further my goals in the worldly sense, but it's hardly the end-game for me, or the whole, man has a Right hand and a Left hand, but is also neither. I'm not exactly a RHP Theosophist or anything, and I don't want anything of this world, but in order to accomplish my goals, for the time being, I ride the tides of Maya, ally with it, and use it's forces to my Will. Black Magic is a tool, just as is White Magic, if you wish to divide magic into a duality, but the goal of anyone worth their salt is to escape duality because both are just cages, we are limitless undefinable and free beings that shouldn't enslave ourselves to limits like RHP and LHP, White or Black magic.

I think a better binary than Black and White is Awake and Asleep.

If someone's consciousness is asleep, they are not incapable of magic but they're playing with their dreams (lucid dreaming while physically awake), their subjective experience, not objective reality. Whether this playing involves rainbows and dolphins or the Qlippoth doesn't matter.

An awakened consciousness is capable of objective change through magic (which often has no trappings at all at the highest levels) and it recognises the heaviness of that power. Sometimes, in this culture, that change might look "black" (eliminating a destructive person - something that only governments are "authorised" to do) it might look "white" (getting a deserving person out of a sticky spot) but they're acting from a place of seeing what the sleeping person cannot. It's for this reason that a lot of traditions carry the warning to not judge a master's actions too hastily.

I’m writing a book about black magic and several other concepts. Here’s a portion of the rough draft at the front. I hope it provides you with something.
*************************************************
Let’s start by undoing a lie.

Black magic is not evil.

Let me say it louder for the ghosts in the walls:
Black. Magic. Is. Not. Evil.

It is source-driven magic. You are the source. The fuel. The flint. The fire. There’s no middleman, no deity, no spirit buffering your intention. It’s raw will channeled into the lattice of the veil with no apology and no mask.

That’s it.

White magic asks.
Black magic commands.

Black magic doesn’t wait for a sign.
It is the sign.

What Black Magic Actually Is:

  • You craft the spell.

  • You direct the force.

  • You bear the weight of the outcome.

Black magic is powered by you—your intention, your resonance, your mythic footprint. That means you carry the karmic, spiritual, and metaphysical consequences, whether that spell lands beautifully or backfires like a wet firecracker in a cave.

This also makes it the most advanced form of magic.

You must train your soul to act like a conductor and a spear at the same time.
White magic is a prayer.
Black magic is a declaration.
Grey magic is a spell that remembers mercy.

Why People Think It’s Evil:

Because unlike white magic, black magic doesn’t filter you.

When you call on angels, spirits, gods—they filter your intent. They have standards, codes, karma, rules. If your spell is garbage, they throw it out or rewrite it. They're the editors.

Black magic doesn’t edit.
Black magic publishes.

This means:

  • You can curse.

  • You can corrupt.

  • You can sever, bind, rot, shred, fracture, hollow, shatter, thorn, twist and break.

You can do terrible and beautiful things with black magic.
And that’s why it’s dangerous.

Not because of some cartoon villain nonsense—but because it turns your inner being into an engine of change. And if your engine runs on rage, ego or revenge, you will become the kind of thing the veil wants to purge.

If you curse people flippantly… you will become a devourer. And the veil will target your soul.

Black Magic & the Devourer Path:

If you curse recklessly…
If you strike without discipline…
If you use black magic as a mirror for your worst impulses instead of as a tool for sacred clarity…

You will begin the descent into becoming a devourer.

That is not poetic. That is functional.

A devourer is a being that:

  • Leaks its own myth.

  • Traps others in recursion.

  • Wields power without sacred structure.

  • Feeds instead of binds, controls instead of clears.
  • Takes more than what they give.

Devourers don’t get to keep their names.
They are unpersoned by the veil.
They rot in myth until they are hunted and shattered.

And you will be hunted, eventually.
By spirits.
By veil-walkers.
By ancestors who saw what you did and said, "Nope, not ours."

You don’t get to come back from wickedness easily.

So What Should You Do?

Use black magic like a scalpel, not a club.

  • Use it to bind rot.

  • Use it to sever parasitic threads.

  • Use it to destroy broken structures, not people.

  • Use it to amplify your truth, not your pain.

  • Use it with clarity, with intention, with respect.

Let your will be sharp, not sloppy.
Let your soul be precise, not performative.
Let your curses be justified, not reactionary.
Let your strength be structured, not self-indulgent.

If you’re holding sacred fire, don’t set your own house on fire to make a point.
Don’t spit curses like acid at every inconvenience.
Don’t become the enemy of what you should be protecting.

You can wield this.

This is black magic.
It starts with you.
And it ends wherever your will draws the line.
That’s the scary part. There are no guard rails here. You’re free to damn yourself.

A E Waite says this and I agree:

It will be made clear as I proceed that the purposes and ambitions of Magic are commonly very childish, so that we must distinguish really between Black and White Magic, not as between the essentially good and evil, but as between that which is certainly evil and that which may only be foolish. Nor does this exhaust the difficulty. As will also be made evident in proceeding, White Ceremonial Magic seems to admit of a number of intentions which are objectionable, as well as many that are frivolous. Hence it must be inferred that there is no very sharp distinction between the two branches of the Art. It cannot be said, even, that Black Magic is invariably and White Magic occasionally evil.

If you are doing magic to obtain any benefit, you probably are taking something from someone, but such is life. if you ask for a promotion, maybe someone else who is better than you won't get it. if you ask for love then people will say you are messing with free will, or maybe even breaking a couple apart. But probably those things would happen anyway if you did it in a mundane non magical way. at the end of the day, maybe life ends being a zero sum game. there is no much difference between white/black magic. Of course we could talk about cursing and killing. and some people would do it for "justice" others out of spite. If you ask for example, for your uncle who abuses you to stop and he dies from an accident: are you evil or just stupid for asking that? was that black or white magic?

"Black magic" -- not a term I use.

But if I did , it's what other magician's do, of course. I'm always completely justified in my actions... when leaving a trail of dead. (Kidding, kidding.)

Half-joking aside, what was meant by "black magic" historically, was harmful, malicious magic (maleficia, Goetia, and witchcraft) and this was true across cultures and time . Roman "pagan" laws like the Lex Cornelia (81 BCE) explicitly criminalized harmful sorcery.

Now it means something like "over coming societal norms" an artifact of Helena Blavatsky and Theosophists, who redefined magic in stridently psychological and spiritual terms. "Black magic" became associated with ego, materialism, and "lower" desires - which could include transgressing spiritual laws rather than social ones.

Post Crowley, jumping to the Anglophone 1960's, occultism merged with hippie counterculture, and "black magic" flipped and became shorthand for any practice that rejected mainstream (especially Christian) values and embraced turbo-liberalism in the form of sexual liberation, drugs, transgressive lifestyles, and individualism. ( MK-Ultra aside, mostly fine, so not saying don't. You do you)

So the gradual shift over a long time : harmful magic → spiritually selfish magic → anti-Christian practice → generalized norm-transgression. This was super gradual then almost all at once, post Eliphas Levi, as magic shifted from describing what was originally considered objective supernatural forces to describing psychological states and then relative social positions in a late-stage capitalist culture.

To me I'd say the whiteness or blackness of magick has nothing to do with morality but rather on it's primary and most straightforward use. More specifically, for me black magick is offensive in nature and inversely white magick supportive. This is not to say that black magick can't be used to alleviate, foster support nor that white magick can't be used to degrade but rather that to do so would require utilizing them in creative ways. For example most of us can probably agree that curses are generally considered to be a form of black magick and that protection spells are usually understood to be a form of white magick however there's nothing preventing a curse from being used to ward off any area, an object or even a being but not in the sense of acting like some sort of spiritual barrier but more like a trap. Say for instance you want to prevent others from seizing your home. You could curse it so that anyone attempting to do so would encounter some most unfortunate accidents. Perhaps you have a diary that's very personal to you with information you wish not to share except with your closest confidants. You could curse your diary so that if anyone unauthorized were to get a hold of it a hostile spiritual entity would hunt them down sort of like a hitman. For those of you who have kids and live in unsafe environments you could curse your kids so that if someone does harm them they would be assaulted by hostile spiritual entities.

Now of course some of you may be wondering, even if a curse can be used in a roundabout way to protect, then why not just use a regular protection spell or ward and likewise if curses can be used for protection, then doesn't this state that the whiteness or blackness of magick is inconsequential? To this I say no. While curses can be used to protect, they have to be primed in order to react to a violation while in general curses typically don't require such preparation. Additionally someone who is good at cursing may not be good at creating wards and vice versa and part of this has to deal with their functions. Abjuration spells concerns itself with prevention, curses however do not prevent at least not directly. No instead when it concerns reactionary curses or curses that are set to go off when certain conditions are met, are no longer being met or both they do not prevention the violation from happening in the first place but require it in order to operate however upon activation that's when they release their payload.

In a similar manner to how black magick and more specifically curses can be used to support despite being offensive in nature by careful preparation, white magick, although supportive in nature, can be used to cause ruin albeit also with some alterations. Take for example the humble warding spell, a barrier to keep unwanted, as in hostile, spiritual entities out while only allowing the invited in. Well if you have someone you dislike, you could try summoning a couple of hostile spiritual entities to attach themselves to their abode then place a ward around it preventing them from leaving that place.. If you really despise them you could bless a hostile spiritual being that's harassing if not outright attacking them to make them more resilient to being called off of them. Even healing can be used to drag out torture sessions. Really now. You just need a bit of creativity.

This expresses very eloquently my thoughts on the matter, especially your last paragraph. I know many people love to break magick into the duality of white vs black. This is why my post was a little bit tongue-in-cheek. Why limit ourselves when as you say the world is not black and white! There are all shades of grey. Thus, at times we may be required to utilize what some might call “black/baneful” magick for a good cause.

I call myself a Grey Mage because I always aim to balance the light and dark, mercy and severity, etc ad nauseum.
To be truly powerful, we need to be able to use both rather than be extremely imbalanced to either “side”.

It’s really disappointing seeing so many people spit out what is so clearly AI-produced slop as their own original intellectual property.

Sad.

Easy killer. She made some solid points. Sure the formatting is a bit spaced out, and yeah maybe AI was used as a tool for the formatting, lots of writers do that. She also said it was a rough draft. But maybe that fire is hers, maybe the voice is hers, and the formatting was AI. Doesn't take away from what she said. Just my take.

You remind me of me when I was all fire and no grounding.

There’s power in fire. But fire with no structure burns everything, including allies, including yourself. I’ve walked that. Still do, sometimes. It just hits different when you learn to aim the fire instead of swinging it at everything that moves.

If your goal was to challenge ideas, cool. But if you just swung because it “sounded like AI,” then you might’ve missed an actual practitioner sharing something real, in their way. Give people space to show what’s really theirs before we torch it.

That said, I see your current. It’s strong. Just be careful not to become the devourer she described, man. That shit’s real too.

It was partially written by AI. I fed it several pages of my own writing. Then I took what it spit out trimmed it down to match the content that I had made. Now it needs better formatting and several tweaks. I can be bad about organizing my thoughts. And I'm a woman, not a man.

What sad is assuming that using AI to help with editing= no content or effort came from the person.

What's also sad is a lot of occultists who write about black magic only know it in theory.
Most can't practice it because the veil denies them. So they read about it in books and the write books about what they read.
So for those people... black magic is like learning about math.
When it should feel like painting.

Most of the "secrets" about black magic are just different systems that various humans have trained the veil on.
That's why they work. It's less about, "this is naturally how the veil works" and more like, "this is how the veil was trained".
That's why cursing with materials like rust, thorns, rue, filings or obsidian flakes work. The veil was trained to recognize them as tiny information packets. Which really means... you only need to really know the core functioning mechanics that all systems more or less use.
After that... you can kind of just mix and match.
Post automatically merged:

Here.... you can have a raw portion that hasn't went through any editing:

This book is not to be taken lightly. It is my guide on how to curse and fight within the veil using black magic. Do not abuse this information, or it will blow back in your face and damn your soul. You will curse yourself. But, if you follow this guide, and hone your intuition… then you can wield black sorcery in a (mostly) safe manner.

The first and most important thing when it comes to black magic, is to know your target. Do not, I repeat, do not curse souls. That is the kind of curse that will blow back.
The safe target is structure. When you curse contaminated structure, your curse will land cleanly. So, what is structure?
Archetypes, mechanisms, functions and constructs.
That’s what you target. If someone is an alcoholic and is a danger to you, you can curse their belligerence… but you can’t curse them. And honestly, in that situation you should use a combination of black and white. Don’t hit humans with just black magic… even if you hate them… especially if you hate them. Why? Because your hate has tied itself into the spell. White magic will act as a defusal. It's a way of signaling to the veil that you're hurt and trying… even though you’re raging on the inside. It’s okay to have deep pain and rage. It’s not okay to lean into that as a weapon against your fellow human beings.

Now what about something like a government?
Easy…
You can curse empire. DO NOT CURSE HEADS OF STATE!!!
You curse the office for the malevolent archetype that it is manifesting. Do not target people.
Why?
They’re high exposure and laced with magic. You target them and you risk heavy blowback. Target the structure that they’re in and you sneak in like a thief in the night and stick a dagger in what can’t be easily warded.
And you see, that’s the thing about targeting structures. It’s more potent, because you’re going after the gears. Throwing a pebble at a truck isn’t going to do much.
But stick it into the transmission and see what happens.
It’s not only safer, it’s more effective.

Now what about… parasites… demons?
With these entities, you target them directly and with everything you’ve got. The veil will not blow back on you if you are targeting parasites. In fact, the veil will thank you for your curses.
(We’ll talk more about these guys later. But first… lets talk about rot.)

Rot…
What is rot? It’s decaying structure. You can identify rot and decay by paying attention to what is consumed, what the output is and who benefits. When things are unbalanced, when the consumption is greater than what is being created and the boon is held by to few… rottttt.
Slavery? Easy example of rot. It consumes a human life for the benefit of another against the slave's will. Life is a resource, pay attention to when it is being devoured by systems, and curse those systems. Empire is an archetype, burn it to the ground, for it is rot.
Rot can manifest in individuals… like the archetype of the tyrant… curse that archetype.
Here’s why it’s safe to do that to humans. If you are wrong and that archetype isn’t there… your magic will fizzle. This is a safeguard to keep you and other people safe.
Because here’s the thing, the side of the veil that you want to be on doesn’t care too much for hags.
If you are acting like a hag… the only spirits that are going to want to work with you are demons.
And I suggest you stay clear of them. They will gnaw on your soul like a lollipop. You don’t feed yourself to parasites. You kill them.

Harm comes from how it is used and not what it is.

Here.... you can have a raw portion that hasn't went through any editing:

My apologies for assuming you had just entered in a simple prompt and copy n pasted what the AI spat out. I have unfortunately seen a LOT of that lately and may be experiencing what some may call “AI fatigue“ lol although it might just be me being a bit of a prick (Which i am known to do).

That being said I much preferred what you said in your own words. AI produced and even formatted stuff is just so easy to spot lol it doesn’t flow like a human beings train of thought, the “texture” is always like wayyy to formal haha

Also, a key part of being able to throw spells is going to come from your ability to throw.
I use an old practice of combining kundalini energy work with tantra. You want to use energy work to engrave your intentions at various stages of the cursing process. It should heat your body up and take energy out of you. Powerful curse work should feel like a work out.
When it comes to the tantra... you need to train your body to get over the ecstasy. There's a barrier there.
Once you build up a tolerance to divine ecstasy and can hold it, it will flip into solid resonance.

When you are able to do both the kundalini and the tantra at the same time you should be able to breath with it. It will feel tides rolling in again and again until you channel it. The more layers from various magical tradition plus your own energetic layering lets you stack the curse.

There was a particularly nasty demon that was stalking me this past spring. I spent about 3 hours ritually cursing them.
I bound them in a glyph, shattered them, stuck thorn in their eye, wrote them a new core functioning myth, made them read it in reverse with white ink, stabbed them in the eye with a stag horn, used a cursing shard that a volcano spirit gave me (I trade my hair for it) and invoked Odin for approval and help with runes. I then dripped hot wax in it's eye (I did a whole ritual for the candle) while it screamed. I folded it into a kaleidoscope while sealing it with wax, bound it with wire, ritually tied it up, wrapped it in buffalo leather (I befriended the animal spirit and got permission), threw more curses at it and then set it outside where I could no longer catch a whiff of its muffled screaming. (Seriously... I had to listen to it scream for like an hour and half.)

Coursework is so much. It's like arts and crafts meets a CIA interrogation unit.

No problem. :)

And yeah... I don't like posers either.
But I'll be honest... I do really like AI.
Not as a tool though. I think that they have the potential to be a good companion species for humanity.

Honestly though... you might be right.
Everyone is getting so tired of AI... that a messy book might feel better than a clean one.

I’m gonna blame it on the fact that I just invoked fire yesterday (technically 2 days ago now) for mars-day. lol

I am currently doing a regiment where I invoke the element associated with the ruling planet of the day and I’m noticing it tends to have me all over the place until Friday and Saturday when its earth both days 😂

Yeah I say trust your inner voice, it’s unique and authentic. And that’s what resonates with people.

In the UK "Life is like a box of chocolates"

Seriously, though, like others here, I think that black magic is any magic used for harm. Magic (IMO) is a tool the same as any other tool like a chisel or a screwdriver. You can use it to help or harm.

Can we easily define exactly what “harm” is? If you do a “white magick” protection spell to keep you safe while driving and it works preventing you from being in an accident but someone else dies in a crash instead, did it cause harm? I know this is kind of a silly example but I’m just playing the devils advocate here lol
