#1. I notice that the spells in the Harry Potter movies (yes yes I know....it's fiction) sound VERY "Latin based". Is there a reason for this?
#2. And this is a real pip (LOL)....can you actually USE the spells from the movie to perform magic? I mean magic comes from your whole person focusing on the intention. I know the words from the Harry Potter movies are just words. But if you can USE THEM to help FOCUS your intention better than anything else, might they not become useful for magic? Just asking is all. ;)

Any language can be used, the basis for wether it works or not is more based on your belief that they will work, I noticed something as well that may be disturbing to some but belief is not only flesh based, theres got to be an aspect of your higher self that also believes that your intention is in your best interest in alignment to a life goal or life path. If you can harness the power of belief then the language is less important, it may be more difficult having in the back of your mind that you know Harry Potter is fiction, it may stunt some belief. However… I try to keep in mind that when using languages there are words in English that denote a negative, “such as “week end” - “weak end” - “Morning” “Mourning” so whatever words you can use to avoid any negative connotations is what I suggest,
Everyone has their own flavor or beliefs but imo that is the way to go, after all … all languages are made up. It just seems English has more negative meanings.

My apologies… as for Latin.. a lot of English is from Latin etymology, especially scientific words where Latin is still used. it just gives it more flare

2. I had Latin at school which is why I'm a bit sniffy about Dog Latin. Likewise, I'm unable to use that financial spell posted today because it's just an enumeration of disjointed Latin-ish words in the nominative, like the person who wrote it didn't want to bother with the fiendish grammar (six cases! five or more types pf declension and conjugation! arrgh...) of that language. If I can't take the words seriously, no matter what respected author wrote them, they're rubbish for me for spell purposes. Enochian, enns, ancient Greek or Hebrew, barbarous names, sure, anything that sounds impressive, but no joke spells that make secretly snigger and thus ruin a ritual's atmosphere. The same thing goes for spells that sound too much like nursery rhymes or somehow aesthetically annoy me. It's distracting and disturbs the flow.

My sentiments exactly, they have to connect to you on a deeper level in which it resonates with you and you are able to embrace is with body, mind and spirit.

I also agree.

There are traditions that claim that some languages are especially useful because they are considered sacred. Latin, Sanskrit, root languages that have been used for communicating spiritual or esoteric ideas / ritual seem to be preferred.

That deeper connection seems to be easier when you knowingly use one of these. Maybe because it's easier to believe and embrace those words/meanings if they're from a "real" language. Maybe because of something inherent in the languages themselves or egrigores around them. I don't think anyone actually knows, for all that we all have opinions on it.

Might make for some interesting experiments though, if someone is so inclined, though that's probably a topic for another thread. :D
