I am searching for contemporary Yogic texts that may serve as a foundation for the exploration of Yogic philosophy and practices. Additionally i would ask that any recommended texts be those that dispense with the "western self-help ethos" that i believe hinders many would be seekers and practitioners of Yoga in the realization of Yogic philosophies and practices. Thank you.

I'd like to recommend Yoga and Kriya: A Systematic Course in the Ancient Tantric Techniques, very thorough and practice-oriented. He's also written other books on yoga, haven't read them yet.
