Abraham’s Boys

Abraham’s Boys is out, and with an IMDb rating of just 4.3, it’s clearly not going down too well.
It got me thinking - have filmmakers run out of good ideas for vampire movies?
There have been scary vampires, sexy vampires, funny vampires, teenage vampires… so where do you even go from here?
Are there still new stories to tell?

I think so.
I've seen the vampire genre used to tell stories about various fears (AIDS, frailty, loss of identity, eternity and meaninglessness etc.), histories and social commentary (colonialism, slavery, inner city slums).
And good ol'fashioned gore, violence and gothic romance.

Maybe the less said about sparkly vampires, the better.

Maybe vampires are only interesting now if they’re not really about vampires. Something ordinary like family, ageing or loneliness, with the vampire element making it darker. That could work.
OK, let’s leave the sparkles in the past.
