An experience of uncertain quality. What is this thing?

Hello, good folk.
I had an experience a few years ago during my time as an absolute novice. I have since learned much, but I am seeking some more experienced practitoners who may be able to help me understand my experience, and help me categorize it for the sake of knowledge.

I had decided to make a series of shrines around a local forest, small things of sticks and stones and other bits, undedicated in purpose- following my intuition to a series of three places, constructing them, and then finally at the final one, meditating, and giving half an apple, of which I gave a drop of blood.
I don't know entirely why, it had just felt right all the way up until that point.
There was no series sense of wrongness or discomfort during my experience, up until about a week later, when I stepped outside one evening, late after one of my shifts with my work.

I remember hearing a strange and loud, mechanical sound, deep from the nearby forest. The sound was nothing I could identify- but was nothing like a truck or other form of engine, not the electrical hum and buzz of a transformer. It was a sound like a thick blanket of inherently mechanical feeling force with breaks in the middle that sounded like steel legs slamming against something. I know for a fact that the forest therein isn't used as logging or other efforted sorts- and it was deep summer, turning to fall.
The noise made me turn my head, and there, just where the lights ended on the edge of the parking lot, a slope where vines and grasses and wildflowers met the forest border, and just at the edge of the light, a thing, crouching among the bushes, rose to it's full height. It was dark, an outline, translucient flesh that was dark still. We stared at one another for a few moments-
And then it simply dissipated from sight. Dissapeared.

The thing is, after this, I had asked coworkers if they had heard the sound that evening too- and a few had, and one mentioned a similar sort of experience.

What is it? Any ideas?
