Hi all. Is it possible to initiate oneself into Chaos magic?
If so any book recommendation?
Thanks πŸ™

Self-initiation is definitely possible. I understand auto-initiation to be a different phenomenon, where one becomes initiated into something without realizing it has happened until after the fact. Many people mark near death experiences, out of body experiences, periods of extreme hardship and traumatic events as such auto-initiatic experiences. I do not often like to discuss my experiences because I am aware it walks a fine line of offering background and being self-aggrandizing. However, it was not until some years after certain experiences that I realized there had been some unintentional auto-initiations taking place. Being on board a ship which was nearly lost at sea (water,) having a near-death experience in a wildfire (fire,) having been an undertaker (earth,) and battling with the control of thought (air,) proved to, in my mind at least, to have been elemental auto-initiations.

Go out and live out in the wilds for a while, and if you have strong intuition you'll learn the rhythms of nature and take a half-step onto the path of being a shaman or something.

I lived out of doors for the better part of four consecutive years, in wilderness most people can't even imagine exists. I slept on mountain tops, drank water from crystal streams, observed the stars and came face to face with every manner of beast. Your assessment as to whether or not my intuition is strong enough to become a "shaman or something" is a testament of your own perceived lack of achievement and imagination.

I'm glad the perspective was in some way valuable. You've probably experienced many initiations of your own.

I just briefly looked into what the IOT, a chaos-magical order or 'pact' co-founded by Peter J. Carroll, was up to these days. Their Book (see bottom of

) states that they have a noviceship of six months where you're expected to master "The Book of the Novice" which is basically Liber MMM (in "Liber Null & Psychonaut"). After this period you can become a probationer and a Neophyte and only then an Initiate and permanent IOT member, which means that in the beginning you're on your own except for possible supervision by a mentor (and hopefully he or she isn't

).

Traditional orders or covens perform formal initiations marking the start of a spiritual career within an organisational hierarchy, so here 'initiation' means that you receive permission and empowerment to set out on your path with the order's/coven's blessings, something which goes against the grain of most chaos magicians who tend to be extreme individualists - one of the IOT's blog posts on initation starts with

, which is more like it. The IOT's Initiate grade is more an administrative thing for which you may apply after a couple of years of being loosely associated with the order and doesn't involve a conferment of any special magical abilities.

Classic chaos magic, if there is such a thing, isn't all fun and games. Working through Liber MMM as prescribed by Pete Carroll is tough and requires daily practice, which in itself could be called an initation of sorts - hone your abilities as a chaos magician and therefore you are a chaos magician, it's as simple as that. You may be a noob chaos magician, a yet unskilled chaos magician but a chaos magician nonetheless. Just sit down and practice regularly, and ta-da, you're initiated.
