Beginner Seeking Guidance on Mind Focused Occult Practice

hi everyone,

I’m a beginner in occult practice and would appreciate guidance from experienced practitioners. I’m mainly interested in practices involving the mind, consciousness, self realization, the subconscious, dreams, and altered states.

I’m particularly interested in things like Ars Notoria, sigil work, meditation, dream work, lucid dreaming, and practices involving communication with benevolent or protective spirits for guidance and personal development.

I enjoy experimenting with altered states such as gnosis and would like to explore them more seriously, while making safety and proper practice a priority. I’d appreciate recommendations for reliable books, traditions, spells, exercises, or rituals suitable for a beginner.

I have no interest in demons, curses, black magic, or harming others. I’m specifically drawn to the introspective, spiritual, transformative, and consciousness oriented side of occultism.

Thank you for any guidance!

I've been making great use of the search function!
This is a link to some beginner book recs.
This is a useful thread.

Check out the Right Hand Path, White Magic and Divination forum (no demons, curses, or black magic there) and also have a look through the Astral Projection, Lucid Dreaming and Psychedelia forum as well. Also (if you don't already) once you qualify for library access you could check out any number of books related to your interests.

Finally, my personal advice is to start a dream journal to begin strengthening dream recall. A mindfulness and/or meditation practice is also highly recommended, although not something I've personally mastered just yet lol.

If you're really interested in how the mind works, there's simply no way around meditation. My go-to book in this field:

Thanks for the recommendation! The Mind Illuminated looks useful for meditation, but I was actually looking more specifically for practical occult/magical practices things I can actively perform, like Ars Notoria, sigil work, dream incubation, scrying, or benevolent/protective spirit work. I'm mainly interested in magic focused on consciousness, the subconscious, dreams, altered states, self-realization, and personal development. Do you have any beginner friendly books or practices you'd recommend for that?

You could say:
For sigil work, I'd recommend Frater U∴D's Practical Sigil Magic and of course the classic Liber Null & Psychonaut by Peter J. Caroll. Some of the other categories, e.g. self-realization and personal development, are rather spiritual paths with no one standard map. Do you want to take the religious, the psychological, or the freestyle route, and if so, in the context of which religion, field of psychology, or quirky philosophy? Better start with one field and see where it takes you, or ask an AI if you still insist on a panoramic overview.
