I'm genuinely curious why some niche books are going for 1500 euros in some places online. Who's paying for this. Is the author making more money than if he printed on demand or something?

Limited editions.

That's it. Some books are printed in few hundreds of pieces and some even like in 12 copies. In such cases their price inevitably goes into insane hights. Can't deny that some of these editions are beautiful, but I personally only approve if cheaper version for actual practitioners who want to read and use it, is available.

Never bought one, myself. That is about to change with the release of the 2nd edition of She of the Night. Doesn't have all the ostentation of the first, but it is still the same text/illustrations at $200 for the set. I'm not sure if this would technically qualify, but at my budget it damn well does. Totally worth it, though, IMHO.

I’m currently reading She 2nd edition & had no problem paying the price. Enjoying it so far!

Collecting has become a huge hobby again in recent years (pokemon cards, comic books, figurines), and it's been extending into the "rare occult book" market too. Limited runs, high quality binding, and armchair magicians buying into the aesthetic have made prices go sky high. The author usually doesn't make much money from it, unless you're Jack Grayle doing a 10th limited run of a mid book. It's usually just scalpers and resellers trying to push the needle.
