Will this work though? They say you need to be a member of the GoM patreon for the magick to work

I know we are not supposed to discuss books here but in the initial email he sent when he released the book, he said you don't have to be a member. So just try the book out.

Then I suggest you don't. We have this no-discussion-here rule for a reason. Most members will open the thread, grab the book and not bother to read the replies. In the Book Discussion and Reviews sub-section, on the other hand, everybody who knows something can chime in, here you'll be probably limited to a dialogue between you two only.
