Well, for my two cents...That is very good question, I label it as a dream because it happens when I am sleeping, but much of the experiences in the dreams are not so different of the astral travels. I think it could be a very good topic on its own. I have to think about it for a while, would be nice if others join that conversation.
So far nothing disproved this theory for me. I will speak of layers, as that works for me. Physical layer is where we work and are when awake. When we get out of body for astral travel, that is astral layer. Between the two there is mental layer. (some people replace the names of the two, which can cause confusion) When we fall asleep, we go to the mental layer, the closes to the physical body. Mental travelling would be traveling almost physical world, also mental layer can be reached when awake with imagination, like daydreaming or even when communicating with some spirits that can get into mental layer, can even go so far as being physically visible.
When we fell asleep, we go to mental layer and start forming our thoughts around us, forming a dream. I assume that a dream is like a mirror chamber where we reflect onto ourselves what is within us by experiencing it as being in dreamed environment.
