Do you have complete control in your dreams?

I recently tweaked my typical rituals by using symbols and specific colored candles. The first night after doing this I had a dream that was continuous with a series of events being intertwined. People from my past appeared and I was able to control my actions while being consciously aware of what I was doing.

Before this, I could never remember my dreams. If I did remember my dreams then I wouldn’t have control, such as if I was in danger I couldn’t throw a punch or push away if I really wanted to.

Has anyone else had these kind of experiences after practicing particular rituals?

It's called lucid dreaming. I think that most people experience it at least once in their life spontaneously. There are people who work on achieving this state on their own will., It definitely has good uses.

There is a lot of books on how to master Lucid dreaming, It is also included in many books on astral travelling that I've read. (of course, quality varies...)

Like Morell said it’s lucid dreaming. Most guides have some version of establishing routines that help signal to your mind when you’re asleep/dreaming.

When I’m seriously meditating a lot or do a lot of ritual work, especially if I’m doing planetary work (set hours), I lucid dream a lot. It can be quite helpful once you start doing it regularly.

The two lucid dreaming recommendations that crop up often that I can testify as working: "reality checks" and dream journaling. Reality checks consist of making a habit or habits of trying things that are impossible in waking life until you find yourself doing it in a dream, then when it doesn't work properly in the dream, it either triggers the lucid state or wakes you up. I use mirrors, I make eye contact with myself in mirrors as a habit and when the mirror doesn't work properly, I know I'm in a dream.

Dream journaling is great for multiple purposes, but it's important to remember to read the journal a few days, weeks or months after the dream to reflect back on it to notice themes that repeat. This is great for self-work and for lucid dreaming, because when you notice a pattern consciously by reading your dream journal, your dream self will be liable to notice the theme in the dream and recognize it for a dream, cueing the lucid state.

I do not keep a dream journal anymore, because I found it inconvenient. Journalling your dreams improves your dream recall, and once I was writing 8+ pages a day about dreams, it just became a writing cramp I didn't look forward to in the morning. I don't guilt myself for quitting my dream journal, and neither should anyone else.
