So my grandma decided to move up to the mountains near my aunt. When she did the previous owners of the house she got abandoned a dog there leaving them without food and water in a rabbit pin. They had left days before my aunt stopped by to check the house out and found the puppy. My grandma has decided to keep the little beagle and named her Bella. She asked the previous house owners son who still in the neighborhood about her he lied and said he never seen her in his life.
Bella is absolutely terrified of everything. Right now my grandma is staying at my aunts because the house nearby she brought needs electrical done to make it safe to live in. Bella only really feels safe in this one crate we got outside and doesnt want to come in the house. My grandma will take her out walk her and such on a leash if she didn't and let the dog outside without a leash she probably would flee to the road and nobody can really get close to this dog she avoids folk like the plague. Heck ive walked her and she freaks out. Instead of walking and me following her she tries to run from me on the leash. Or she'll freeze and cower trying to walk back to her crate. To make her more comfortable I tie the long leash to a pole so she can go pee and poop. Otherwise she gets too scared and doesn't want to go. My grandma plans on slowly introducing her to being outside her crate more and more and hopefully once the electrical is done, let her get used to being in a house.
Turns out this dog however is a really good alert dog. She's a sweetheart but the moment any animal or person comes in the yard she tells you. There was a deer outside tonight I couldn't see it without a light but she spotted it and told us about it. I walked out looked with a flashlight saw it and she stopped. She don't really bark otherwise. Only if something is in the yard that's not usually in it and she thinks shouldn't be there. This is good because the house my grandma brought everytime she goes there stuff is moved. Things go missing. She thinks the old homeowners son is breaking in while she's not there waiting for the electrical to get done so she can actually move in. She's going to have to change the locks and is going to get a home security system. But the dog will make a good addition to the security system.
Anyway...anyone got advice on helping a traumatized puppy get used to a new home? I don't know what the previous owners did to her aside from abandoning her. She's really terrified. I got some ideas I've passed on to my grandma but maybe some of yall have advice we haven't thought of or resources we haven't found.
I been giving her treats and talking sweetly to her on occasion so she knows I'm safe.
