How to Apply Magic to Artistic Pursuits

Art and magic are not separate disciplines. They are twin flames of creation: one channeling inspiration through brush or pen, the other through intention and transformation. If you’ve ever felt that your art is more than self-expression, that it's a spell in form, an evocation in color or rhythm, you’ve already glimpsed the magic.

In my work, I define magic as the art of turning possibility into reality through intentional action. Art does the same thing: It shapes inner vision into external form. But when you consciously combine art with magical principles, the results become catalytic: not just expressive, but transformative.

1. Make Your Creative Process a Magical Working

Every act of artmaking can become a magical act when infused with deliberate intention. In The Magic of Art, I describe this as "experiential magic"—magic that emerges from doing rather than reciting, from embodiment rather than abstraction.

Here’s a basic framework:
  • Define your intention. What are you channeling through this piece of art? Healing? Courage? Manifestation? Catharsis?
  • Design your medium. Will this be a sigil painting, a talismanic collage, a song invoking planetary energies, or a sculpture that houses a spirit?
  • Charge the work. Use ritual breathwork, energy work, or invocations as you create. Let each stroke or note become a layering of magical force.
  • Release the result. Once complete, decide whether the piece should be used, displayed, gifted, or destroyed. Its fate should align with the purpose you gave it.
This makes the act of creation itself the spell, not just the finished work.
  • A painting can be a portal to a metaphysical space.
  • A poem can be a sigil in verse.
  • A song can encode the rhythm of a desired outcome.
  • A story can be a long-form spell, shifting your personal narrative or collective archetypes.

Whatever your medium, explore how it can be turned into a tool of enchantment, embodiment, and transformation. Your magical work feeds your creativity, and your art becomes the manifestation of that internal work.

Most interesting! Even some "working professional" artists may be unaware of the potential of this? I've read a small amount of your writings, I think some of your views are novel and interesting, Well Said!

Also, from what I've seen of your body of work I would describe it as: "unorthodox and highly original". I recommend others here to check into your
stuff for themselves, perhaps some of the younger / newer members might click quick!?!

Thank you. There is some really interesting intersections of art and magic. I recently interviewed Sasha Chaitow who had done some scholarly researchon Joseph Peladan, a french magician and artist. It was fascinating to learn more about how different artists have influenced magical development

How could I have been so remiss to dismiss Austin Osman Spare as a prime example of blending Visual Art and Magic, duh! ;)

I absolutely appreciate this! I am by no means an artist BUT I am enjoying expression through sigil creation and coloring. This is also becoming a form of meditation for me.

I consider myself to be an "art witch" because every spell that I work is an act of creation. Every stitch I sew is knot work, every sigil is a drawing. I even accidentally spelled myself with art - I was working on a complicated design of a painting, and wrote B, G, or P to denote which color went where to not get lost later. Except that I was being quick about writing on wood, and wrote the rune Wunjo instead of "P" over and over again, as well as some Berkano instead of "B". And it has been the least anxiety-inducing painting that I have ever worked on, and I have seen myself grow the most while painting it. I accidentally did step three - I charged the work with my pencil. I hope that the completed work will bring that same Wunjo-Peace and Berkano-Growth to wherever it ends up, and I will be making sure to charge my works like this INTENTIONALLY going forward.
