This guide is formed from my perspective and my time as a primarily spirit focused practitioner and will outline some basics for how I learned to communicate with almost anything (primarily natural things). This guide will not be the most neat, but hopefully will be practical. This guide also expects you have some knowledge on what spirits are.
Some notes before I go into the process:
Just because you can talk to almost anything does not mean those things have much to say. A small rock you find in most cases (barring a spirit attached) will not regale you with in depth conversation nor will a fallen leaf have much to say about the state of the world beyond it being the time of year for it to drop. That being said at higher levels of this skill you can ask questions and potentially learn things about that rock's formation or that leave's life as a part of bigger plant.
The Basics:
1. Open mind open heart: With pretty much any spiritual practice you need to be open to failure and success in equal parts. You must also be open emotionally to what you want to communicate with. Take a moment to breath and think of something that makes you emotionally open up but wouldn't distract you long term for the next step.
2. Find a target you wish to communicate with: I recommend something alive since they have a lot more to say and are more likely to actually hold a real conversation. Something that does not move or moves slowly would also be beneficial so you have time to focus without worrying about it escaping. I myself picked trees for this.
3. Focus on your target with no distractions: You don't have to clear your mind just focus. Visualize the target, touch it, maybe even smell it if that is applicable. This step is where many will struggle and need to practice since focusing without distractions is not something that the modern world teaches us. If you are able to this focus will naturally begin to clear your mind. Not because you fight thoughts that are unrelated, but because your focus stays on the target allowing those thoughts to naturally fade. In many regards this is similar to how I do meditation and perhaps many others.
4. Pick out strange thoughts and listen: When focusing on the target with an open mind and heart overtime you will begin to have thoughts that feel different to your normal random thoughts. They will feel in some way alien or different. They might catch your attention because of that and it's ok to try to focus on them. Think of them as extensions of your focus on the target. At first these thoughts might just feel weird but not necessarily say much, but over time and practice you can pick them out very effectively and get more information about them. Everything has spirit even if it might not have a spirit attached. This distinction is somewhat arbitrary but also important since talking to an animal, plant, or even rock with a spirit attached will be far easier than communicating with a normal target. Regardless, through practice anyone can begin to have a lovely conversation with their favorite tree about the weather, life, and even information like soil quality, desires and wants of the tree, and much more!
5. Have a conversation: Once you have done all of the above and begin to hear the voices of your target its time to start slowly talking. Ask a question (out loud helped me when I was first learning and yes you will look weird if in a public place) and then carefully focus and listen for an answer in your mind. Take notice of the qualities of the response and try to understand it. With enough practice this loop of saying something and listening will train you to talk to your target like you would any person albeit a very strange one.
With these steps anyone who is open to this information can work towards being able to hear the unseen voices in the world!
