Maybe a dumb question but I want to ask it anyway.
I'm a Hekate practitioner. Meditation style communication never worked for me. No visions, no voices. I did guided visualization for a long time and got nothing out of it except numb legs.
What actually happens with me: I just know things. A thought shows up and it has a different weight from my normal thinking. I found out recently that English speakers call this claircognizance. Good to have a word for it, I guess.
There's also a slower thing. Sometimes I ask my goddess for something and get no answer at all. Then a few weeks later the situation resolves itself in some weirdly specific way, and I can suddenly read what the answer was. Usually it turns out the thing I asked for was never going to be allowed in the first place. I try to be harsh with myself about this. If there's any chance it's self comfort, or me bending a coincidence to fit, I throw it out. After that filter, honestly, not much survives. What survives is what I trust.
For divination I use geomancy (the Arabic/Renaissance system, shield and house charts) and sometimes Lenormand. I swore off tarot years ago. Personal vow, long story, and no, I'm not renegotiating it. Geomancy works for me because there's nothing to imagine. Sixteen figures, fixed math. My imagination can't "help".
Why I'm asking: a lot of people seem to use tarot as a live channel to talk with their gods and spirits. I honestly don't know how that works in practice. The few cases I saw up close went bad in the same way every time. Whatever was answering the cards wasn't what they thought it was. An open channel with no ID check seems to attract exactly the wrong crowd.
So how do you do it? Voice, dreams, cards, dice, just knowing? And when something answers, how do you check who it is?
