I'm looking for a Quran.

Islam in America has always been a political concern for as long as I've been around. However, it seems to have gotten bigger.

I want to get a Quran so I can learn more about the Muslim faith for myself at the source. The problem is that I'm not sure how to go about with this.

In Christianity, there are different versions of the Bible, each having some verses that others don't. As such, if I were to do this with Christianity, as someone who wasn't brought up Christian, I'd be really confused. I'd want to know what is the most prominent version. Even though I was brought up Christian, I still don't know this. I grew up on the king James Bible, though.

So, I'm worried that there's different translations on the Quran, and I wouldn't know what version to use.

To a Muslim, every Quran not in original Arabic is lower value, because it is translation. So if you really want to really delve in, you should work your way to read Quran in original.
But if you want a good translation, Muslims should have their own webs offering either online version or free downloadable, just like it is with the Bible online.

The place to start, imo, for English readers is the "clear" Quran. Then partner the reading with a parallel translation site. PM me for recommendations. The idea here is, as you're reading the Clear Quran translation, sooner or later, you'll come to a verse or passage which is provocative for one reason or another. When this happens, use the web to check various translations in order to see how others are interpreting it.

You'll also need a good understanding of abrogation. You see, the Quran is ( claimed to be ) a collection divine revelations received at varying times. The passages in the Quran, though, do not present these revelations in the order which they were received. Instead, the longer and later revelations are first. Most traditional devout Muslims agree, these later longer ( more hostile ) revelations abrogate the earlier shorter ( and more moderate ) revelations which happen to be compiled at the end of the Quran. But, not all Muslims follow this traditional approach to abrogation.

A good Quran you can download for free or order is called: The Goodword Quran translation.
It's a decent simple to read translation.

An app I can recommend is Quranly.

There are lots of places that send you a free copy. Goodword & another is called The Muhsin Khan translation. I'd say the Goodword is the best.

Quran works very well in any language anyway. If you spam it enough you will feel a very high connection regardless of the language.
Short verses and chapters should be memorized in Arabic though. I remember how annoying it was to memorize them

When I began reading the Quran I was told that it does not work in any other language, "learn Arabic, read the transliterations" is what people kept saying. I had a strong feeling that this was not true at all.
The Quran became exceptionally hot during the first 2 quick completions. Over some years I realized that it has something to do with your personal connection and the time spent meditating on the particular text.
I tried the Muhsin Khan, then the Goodword, and also some others, Yusuf Ali (??), not sure. I'm not sure which version the Quranly app uses, probably their own.


Most of the sites that give the books send you a mass printed softcover edition, pocket size. 500-750 small pages. I'd say having an actual book is better than reading it online. Goodword ships them out from India or Bangladesh, takes about 3-5 weeks to receive it. Muhsin Khan Quran comes from the UK I think. There are lots of sites that give them out, some are US only.
