PENGUIN CLASSICS JOHANN WOLFGANG von Goethe The Sorrows of Young Werther TRANSLATED WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY MICHAEL HULSE The story of a young man driven to suicide by an unhappy love affair, The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) is the first great tragic novel of European literature. Based partly on Goethe’s unrequited love for Charlotte Buff and partly on the tragedy of Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem, who killed himself out of love for a married woman, the book gained a reputation as the first great achievement of what a later age was to label ‘confessional’ literature, and Goethe himself spoke of a sense of freedom and deliverance on completing his novel. its The success of Werther was rapid and immense, and a cult quickly grew up around it. Parodies, operas, poems and plays based on the story appeared; in some areas it was seen as scandalous and banned because it seemed to ‘recommend’ suicide. Today, however, we can isolate the novel from the original events and see Goethe’s artistry on own terms. It is, as Michael Hulse says in his Introduction, a work of exhilarating style and insight. Its sensitive exploration of the mind of a young artist at odds with society and ill-equipped to cope with life lends it the status of a tragic masterpiece. The cover shows a detail from Evening by Caspar David Friedrich in the Niedersachsisches Landesmuseum, Hanover

No. Just no. This is classic fiction without any connection to the occult whatsoever. No Dostoevsky, Proust, or Joyce, period.

4: Sorrows Of Young Werther

today we have the Sorrows of young worther we've got a lot of books on this list that are said to contain magic and spells and this is a little different

from the others on this list because it doesn't this is a book that came out in 1774 and it is said to have had a large and negative impact on its readers since

its release Apparently after this book came out a huge wave of its readers ended up taking their own lives because of this strange and dark influence it

had on those who read it young men would start trying to emulate the main character of the book by dressing like him acting like him that sort of thing

before following his horrifying actions in the book this actually led to the book being banned in some countries and for the most part I'm pretty opposed to

the Banning of books but I feel like this is one I can probably get behind it is believed that even people who were in a completely fine head space prior to

reading the book would still be tempted to follow the dark path after reading it which is exactly what has led people to believe that this book is cursed in our world
