Bay Laurel seems to be pretty versatile. Classically it's used for protection and divination, but in recent times I've seen it mentioned in spells for love and money as well.
The underlying idea is that it removes the unwanted, so that the thing / quality that you search for can get to you unhindered. In the case of protection it would be removing a threat (or nuisance) so that a feeling of calm and ease can enter.
As New Year's Eve is a good time to throw away some unwanted crap before starting a new cycle, this is the perfect time for it,
but you can do this spell whenever you feel the desire to.
(start with the LBRP or similar)
in the West
Light a candle and some incense of your choice
Call to and greet Gabriel and say what you are going to do
Take a Laurel leaf in your hand and spend some moments thinking of the thing or person that you want to expel
(if it's a person, you can use a toothpick or match to write the name on the leaf with some oil)
With your right index finger, press into the centre of the leaf, identifying it by thinking of the person, speaking his name, and touching him
Hold the leaf by the stem and feed it to the flame
(keep a small bowl or the empty cup of a tea light nearby to drop the leaf in..)
Thank Gabriel and snuff the candle
Dried laurel, like other evergreen leafs, has a protective oil in it that keeps the plant from drying out
If fire is introduced to it this gives a nice and kinda spectacular sparkle
After doing this, try to avoid spending any energy / time or attention on the subject of the spell
within 7 days you should see a dramatic decrease of his/her/its presence
