Legends and usage of crystals/gemstones

I'm looking for tips and tales about magical crystals/gemstones that are not New Age. I was told by spirit to buy a small piece of white crystal to make a magical tool. (You may remember seeing me asking the same thing for a bell. And yes, there're a lot of things that I've been told to make, and there may be more to come) I believe the spirit will guide me in how to use it, but I would like to learn from ancient legends and others' experiences as a starting point. Any recommendations?

Does white mean white, or could it also mean clear? Amusingly nothing feels "clear" these days. Initially I'd think clear quartz or selenite. Just watch out if you go selenite as it is soluble in water.
