Whats your pick? For me its got to be The Matrix. It basically lays out the entire sketch of reality but uses machines as a metaphor. The rest is quite accurate. Thats why I think it was a phenom (aside from the FX) as it defused mass awakening by presenting that current as entertainment instead. After this we had an influx of tech and, oh look, its about that level where its gonna be realer than real. Or reel. You pick.

There's been a couple of threads about occult movies already but your idea is new - what about 'regular' movies with occult overtones? Haven't seen it but this one comes to mind:
