New to the occult—looking for basic info on love potions

Hi everyone,

I’m completely new to all of this and don’t have any experience with magic or occult practices, but I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of love potions.

I want to learn the absolute basics of how they work. Since I know nothing about this yet, I have a few beginner questions:

1. How do they work? Is a love potion usually something safe that people drink (like a tea), or is it more like an oil used on candles or objects?

2. What are the basic ingredients? Are there common, everyday herbs or spices (like kitchen ingredients) that beginners usually start with?

3. Are there rules? I’ve heard people mention that love magic can be tricky or controversial. Is there anything a beginner should absolutely avoid doing?

I’m just looking to understand the fundamentals and would appreciate any reading recommendations, simple guides, or advice you can share with a newcomer.

Thanks!

First off, there are two tomes on potions in our Library, more on herbs in general as well as numerous love magic books; you can also look up various Forum discussion threads to broaden your horizons. In short, the general consensus seems to be that love magic is good for enhancing one's attractiveness but a very bad idea when directed at a specific person.

Most objections to love magic are of an ethical nature. Some would say that having someone drink a love potion would be similar to slipping that person a roofie. Many love spells in the ancient Greek Magical Papyri are downright rapey where the aim is to torment a woman by means of magic until she finally can't stand it any longer and comes to the sorcerer's bed at night. People have always been driven to extremes by their sexual desire, however they may dress it up as 'purest love' or whatever. Me, I don't judge. People do what people wanna do. For example, there is this folk magic practice where a wife puts some of her menstrual blood into her husbands' food to ensure his fidelity - a valid motive perhaps but she'll be still bending the free will of another person. Besides, it's impossible to gauge the true motives of internet posters. They might profess the sweetest of intententions in their posts while being the stark raving psychos and stalkers in real life who their victim love interests are actually utterly repelled by.

The internet positively brims over with suggestions for partner return spells but what if those partners had very good reasons to escape their relationships? Again, the spellcaster plans to mess with the free will of another person and thus has to accept responsibility for such an act, in my opinion. It's a matter of debate whether there in fact will be some sort of karmic backlash but I think being plagued by guilt and remorse later on is punishment enough. As with any forceful intervention, it's a good idea to think things through first.

Other warnings are somewhat contradictory. Some say that you'll constantly have to renew your love magic, or your target sweet darling will wake up from his or her lovelorn stupor one day. Others think that on the contrary, love magic will permanently shackle you to a person who you might come to despise over time but will be helpless to get rid off. I would say everything will depend on the magician, not the method used - as such, a potion is inert anyway, you have to be skilled enough to activate it and bring it to life.

Brilliant reply thoughtful, well reasoned, and very insightful! 👌

I would add from my own research, anything you do that as @HoldAll says "bends the will of another person" is going to be intrinsically more difficult. On the one hand, a person can react in a huge number of ways, in the same way that rocks don't. On the other hand, even if you succeed, you are going to find out the hard way what the version of the person who conforms to your intent is going to be like. On the gripping hand, finding any kind of coincident may not even be possible, especially if your intent is pretty unrealistic in the first place.

I would say that the more realistic your intent, the less likely you are to use this kind of "will bending".

Welcome! Focus on boosting your own magnetism with kitchen herbs (like honey and cinnamon) instead of forcing a specific person, which usually backfires. For a solid start, read Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs to learn how everyday ingredients safely anchor your intent.

If you're completely new, then maybe it would be a good idea to take the advice that's bring offered to you in this thread.
By 'new,' I meant new to active practice, not the theory. I have an expert background in occult studies and grimoires. I read Arabic and have deeply studied Shams al-Ma'arif by Al-Buni, alongside various rituals for djinn summoning and visions. Because I understand the mechanics, I am well aware of the risks and how to counter them. Thanks for the caution, but there's no need to worry!

Hummmm! Ok. Give a try to books of Al-Toukhi:
Red Magick - Grimoire of Djinn Spells and Sorceries
AND
The Forbidden Grimoire of Harut and Marut

There's plenty of love spell that you can use for Self-love or to someone else.

And do you mind sharing some of the rituals and experiences regarding to this. I would love to learn more about it. Few days ago a shared a post:
Where I shared my experience and the ritual to summon a terrestrial Jinn, and the experience was soooo amazing. I'll look forward to hear more about your rituals and stuff related to Arabic Occultism.
