I've been documenting my personal synchronicities for over 20 years now, and right from the beginning, many of them seemed to completely defy all common sense understandings of how "reality" works... Here's one of the very earliest examples, which still breaks my brain to this day:
One morning I decided I would try to predict, or "intend," rather, the recurrence of a few synchronistic coincidences on the radio. I happened to be driving through a nearby town that I was fairly unfamiliar with, and I passed a building with a sign on the door that said, "The Jungle Room."
"Alright," I though, "I'll intend that the next song on the radio will have something to do with jungles." But immediately it occured to me: The last song that had JUST played on the radio was "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns 'N Roses -- and that actually would have been my best bet for a jungle-themed song; It's highly improbable that they would play two jungle songs in a row, right?
Well, a few minutes go by, and the song "Jungle Love" begins playing.
Well, okay, that's certainly interesting! But hardly improbable enough... I mean, if someone else witnessed that, they could still call it "just a coincidence," and how could I argue? It's not an impossible occurrence, by any means -- I would need a more specific example of this working before I could be convinced, so I started looking around for more inspiration. I soon passed another building with a sign out front advertising some kind of resort or vacation company, which got me thinking: "I've been working insane hours at this boring factory job for a few years now, I feel like I could use a vacation myself...
The next song that came on was "Vacation," by the Go-Go's. I had to look around again to make sure I was really awake and not dreaming!
I then saw an army recruiting ad, and expected something military-related to come on the radio, but was disappointed by the result. "Ah, well that figures, lol. Guess I was just kidding myself." I mean, if this kept going then eventually I would have to conclude that the people running the radio station had no free will, or only existed in my head, like puppets tied to my personal thoughts... Solipsism is a pretty creepy way of looking at the world, and I didn't want to go there. So I decided to give up on messing with the radio, and switched over to my CD player, and the song "Rise" by Origa started playing -- the iconic opening theme song for the anime series Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG. The song starts out with the lyrics, "I'm a soldier…" and I don't really know where it goes from there because she sings in English, Japanese, and Russian, all within the same song... But it definitely has a bit of a military vibe, with themes of soldiers battling spiritual deception.
"Okay," I though, "Well that's at least CLOSER to being army-related... But it seems like a bit of a stretch."
I pulled up into my driveway before the song had even finished, went inside my house, and immediately jumped on MySpace... And right there on the login screen was a video titled "Origarmy" -- a stop-motion animation featuring a bunch of army men made out of origami. Origa + Army?
It was like sync was throwing both of those recent concepts together just to show off. And I decided that was enough for the day, lol.
I was still tempted to try and shrug off those results as “just” a coincidence… But the phenomena itself wasn’t ready to be swept under the rug: Some time later, I was eating with a friend at our local Taco Bell, when the song “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia began playing over the intercom speakers. I awkwardly admitted to my friend that I had recently paid 25 cents for that CD at a yard sale, and thankfully no more than that, because it was the ONLY decent song on the whole album. I then silently wondered to myself if maybe her other album would have been better than that one. I didn’t have to wait long to find out; The following day I went for a walk down my street, and for some reason that entire conversation began replaying in my memory just as I got about a mile away from my house. Less than a minute later, I looked down at the ground and noticed a shiny music CD lying right in front of my feet...
It was THE OTHER Natalie Imbruglia album.
I didn’t care for that album either, lol. But for that specific CD to appear in front me at the exact moment I had a completely random thought about it — now THAT is eerily improbable!
As time went on, I began having frequent out-of-body experiences and hypnogogic imagery while on the verge of sleep, which often contained extremely specific references to things that I would see or experience in my waking life the very next day:
In 2008, my (at the time) girlfriend was sleeping next to me in my bed, and we were about to get up early to travel to a music festival in Atlanta. I had weird dream that ended with a massive stretch of beautiful flowers encompassing the entire periphery of my vision, as if I had my face pressed up against a wall of them. I then woke up to see some interesting images hovering in front of me: the letters MSTRKRFT were just floating before my eyes like a hologram, which completely mystified me for a few moments before fading away. I then noticed my girlfriend was restlessly tossing and and turning and even moaning next to me, still asleep.
I formulated an intention that I could somehow push or insert my dream image of those flowers into her dreaming mind, in hopes that it would transform whatever nightmare she might be having into a more peaceful and calm experience. At this point in my life, I had only been practicing Qigong for a few years, and had already experienced a case or two of what seemed like "accidental telepathy," but I really had no clue if what I was doing would work or if it even made sense... So I was more than impressed when she woke up within no more than a few minutes, rolled over and told me that she was having a bad nightmare where she was running down a hall from some kind of monsters -- and then she saw this one wall that lit up and all these beautiful flowers started coming out of it!
As if that wasn't enough, I then got up and got on the internet to get directions to the festival, and while doing so I took another look at the music lineup. A band called MSTRKRFT was on the list. Now, I'll readily admit that it's entirely "possible" that I had saw the name earlier and it simply slipped into my subconscious... But I honestly didn't recognize the name until that moment, and knew absolutely nothing about them. And why would my subconscious mind choose to spew that band name back at me, out of all the other possible bands it could have highlighted? We went to watch them at the festival, since it felt like that coinkydink was drawing my attention to it for some unknown reason... But nothing special or unusual happened there.
There are so many more bizarre examples that I could easily fill an entire book with them... But most of them actually seem almost pointless and trickster-ish, as if they're poking fun at me or just reminding me that reality isn't as limited or as logical as we like to believe.
What are some of your wildest sync stories?
