A bit of an odd one for you today, folks. Without delving too deep into my personal life, my husband and I preparing to start a family in the not too distant future. One of my concerns that I simply cannot turn to a doctor with is the effects of occult practice on a pregnant woman/fetus and mother/baby. Obviously early motherhood will just be focused on baby and whatever worship practice I can muster (I’m a longtime polytheist).

However, when it comes to more structured, less folky, ”high” magic, do you believe that it’s inherently more dangerous to women and their babies (both in an out of womb)? Even with proper guards, wards, and protections in place? Is the energy of high magic too intense for such a vulnerable period of life? Perhaps it‘s the paradigm that matters? I will of course use my own intuition, but I would be very curious to hear your thoughts. Bonus points if any mothers can chime in here!

From health perspective, I think anything that negatively affects you should also have an influence on the baby in some form.

Whether you'll experience negative energies during pregnancy cased by magick is another matter, it is something you can't be sure to have influence on.

pregnancy is a very inward time. it prepares you for the protective mum. and boy do hormones help with that. hence the weird food and mood swings. my husband says his life changed tremendously with the coming of our first born, so its initiatory for a man as well. ive noticed that its very different with every child. keeping balance with your surroundings i think is the hardest part. at least for me, im very introvert.

im an occult woman, but im more inclined towards monotheism, still i work with spirits. so i imagine your pantheon is taking preparations too, so a child can get born within their system. if i can pray 5 times a day to allah while pregnant, me thinks you can do your occult stuff as well. ;)

you even might wanna talk to them, so you can find comfort in their traditions concerning childbirth, pregnancy, etc..

I have heard that doing serious magick while pregnant can result in birth defects. Something about too much energy being channeled. The source had a ton of experience and was mostly reliable.

My shamanic teacher also told me that it takes children until the age of 3 or so to fully develop their aura, and until then they need constant protections, amulets, guardian spirits, etc.

As with everything else, I encourage divination. Any particular practice while pregnant, or protective talisman for the baby, may or may not be helpful/safe depending on the individual situation, and even varying from day to day.

Best of luck!

Found a good article from a shaman about partner and kids along with shamanic practice.

This feels to be really complex matter. Some practices are surely safe, some should be put aside until it's safe again. But seems like the important stuff has already been said. Intuition and common sense are good guides.
