In the Nyingmapa tradition of Tibet, the lion-faced Wisdom Dâkinî Simhamukha is regarded as the feminine aspect of the personal practice of Guru Padmasambhava. He received this transmission in his youth while in his native country of Uddiyana to the northwest of India from his female Guru, Guhyajnâna Dâkinî. In terms of the Three Roots with regard to his Guru Yoga practice, there is his Peaceful Guru aspect or Guru Zhiwa, his wrathful meditation deity aspect or Guru Dragpo, and his Dakinî or feminine aspect as Senge Dongma or Simhamukha. In the context of the eight special practices of the Sâdhana Section of Mahâyoga Tantra, this goddess is the chief meditation deity for the Mamo rbad-gtong, “averting the curses of the Mamos.” The Mamos (Skt. Mâtrikâs) are dangerous female spirits, or witch goddesses, usually black in colour and having animal heads, who are especially hostile to men because they embody resentments over the ill treatment of women by patriarchal society. Thus, Simhamukha, although a manifestation of Buddha enlightenment, appears in the form of a wrathful Mamo. She has the special magical function of averting and reversing psychic and magical attacks and sending negative energy back to its source.
