Hi,
I am assembling tools of the trade from Magister Officiorum and I have a problem with making the ritual knife.
Does anyone know if the blade MUST have been used to kill someone or can I use any blade?
I'm big fan of cold weapons, having small collection of knives. Unfortunately I'm also the one, who is so clumsy that I already cut myself with every knife in my collection. With exception of the dull ones. Lol.
I suppose that you are not that deep into occult knowledge and I like the question for sure.
Ritual knife, I think that it is usually called Athame, cannot be just any blade. That is probably obvious. In various occult schools you'll find many and varied methods of making, preparing and consecrating Athame. Usually it's a blade that is forged for this exact purpose or is bought new to make sure it wasn't used for anything else. Some ways of making Athame require engravings on the blade or the handle to make it work specifically with the specific spirits.
Consecration of Athame starts with purification and then with activation or enchanting. Some rituals of this tool preparing take months and can create truly potent tools.
Here is the thing. If you purify a tool for use, you are "washing away" the past of it. The intent is that the blade should have only energies and influences YOU put on it. Then it will serve, concentrate and focus your will alone, without any other influences.
So back to the murderer's knife. If you insist on it, by all means ask the cops, perhaps you can find some really openminded one who will help you in gaining such a knife. But consider: it is a knife with energy of murderer as well as killed person, stained with blood and killing. And you don't know the tale. There might be a use for such a weapon, but I think that disadvantage of your lack of knowledge of what truly happened with the blade is too big, not to mention issues of getting such a knife. In history people feared blades that were used to execute people, because they feared that these weapons can become bloodthirsty. Something I would consider seriously for a knife that is supposed to be used in magic.
Especially if you are not deeper into occult yet, I would suggest to avoid blood-tasting knife. Get any stainless steel knife that you feel will serve you well and go with that one.

Truth be told, I myself would probably never use potentially blood thirsty blade for any kind of magic.
