Removing Quebrante: A Traditional Brazilian Folk Prayer

In Brazil, many traditional blessings and folk healing practices are passed from mother to child through generations, especially in rural areas. One simple blessing I learned is used to remove the “evil eye” or spiritual weakness from a child.

While making the sign of the cross over the child, the prayer is spoken softly:

“I gave birth to you, I will raise you, and if you carry the evil eye upon you, I will remove it.”

In Portuguese, it sounds even more powerful:

“Eu te pari, eu te criarei, se tiveres quebrante, eu te tirarei.”

“Quebrante” is a traditional Brazilian folk term connected to the evil eye, spiritual exhaustion, envy, or harmful energy affecting someone — especially children.

I’ve always found beauty in how simple words, spoken with faith and intention, become a form of protection and healing.
