I was reading Rufus Opus and came across his approach to what he calls the Genius and Evil Daimon.

Does he associate the Genius with Crowley’s Holy Guardian Angel (HGA), the one from the Abramelin tradition, or the Agathos Daimon mentioned in the PGM? I’m curious how he understands the relationship between these concepts.

I haven’t practised any of the systems mentioned (I doubt I’ll ever do the Abramelin one, haha).

Has anyone here actually tried Rufus Opus’ method? I’d be interested to hear your experiences or thoughts on it.

All comments welcome!

I have studied these terms and concepts for decades , cross culturally as well and I have my own experiences and conclusions about them .... however I am not familiar with Rufus Opus , so cant comment on your specific request .

I find it better to get my info from eclectic sources rather than some other single researcher .

The classical difference (in terms ) goes right back to a rather confusing discussion between two ancient Greeks whether one term or the other describes good or bad .

But regardless of terms , I can affirm that my research in this ( and in the history of religion and comparative religion ) that there are .... in a nutshell .... 'good and bad ' forces contending within us . A great debate over millennia is if they are external or internal , mostly, over time they have been considered external ... but now ? ... perhaps a bit of both ? But that doesnt really matter as , it has been found out, that either way , they are subject to the same rules and treatment of management .

Another thing ; it may not be as simple as having 'one good one' or ' one bad one ' .... you can have multiple .

And I think it probably does all get set up , for the individual, among the dynamics of the incarnation's natal horoscope.

I believe the Genius and Evil Daimon method RO talked about was taken directly from Agrippa book 3. RO wrote an article about the HGA for the anthology book, The Holy Guardian Angel, published by Nephilim Press. That will surely provide a better explanation of his opinion than we can. It's a very well written article, among a dozen total written by various magicians/authors (some of whom were members of old EM/SA/WF.)

To quote RO's article, and also note that I wholeheartedly agree here:

"I can tell you openly and without doubt the true nature of the HGA:
The Holy Guardian Angel is your Holy Guardian Angel, and it will be
what it will be, whatever you need it to be, whatever is necessary for you to
become what you are supposed to be. It is an agent of your attainment. It
brings you spirits, it connects you to wisdom, it teaches you, it provides for
your needs, it gets you favorable attention and hides you from unwanted
attention. It is your guide, your servant, your teacher, your informant, your
mentor, your butler, your trainer, drill sergeant, Mother, Father, and Cool
Uncle rolled into one.
Above all else, it is your friend.
Ultimately, you won’t understand what the HGA is all about until you
start hanging out with your own. I can talk about what I’ve found on my
quest, and you’ll pick up clues and hints that will serve you well, as I did
when I was researching those who I believed had attained what I was after
in my early pursuits.
Whatever I say though, don’t you believe it completely without any
questions. Know it’s a reproduction of a set of experiences that words can
not truly reflect. The words I choose are the ones that mean what I think,
because that’s what they mean to me. You’ll put it differently when you’ve
been through it yourself."

Thank you for your reply! I’ll look for that RO article in the book. Your answer was really helpful, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain it.
