hello everyone, i wanted to ask if anyone might know anything about sleep paralysis and its causes. my whole life especially when i was younger id have almost nightly episodes with intense experiences (id see shadowy figures with red eyes and id feel them sitting on me or clawing into me and id hear them speaking usually it sounded in reverse) its dwindled but still happens on occasion, weirdly i think it stopped cause i started refusing to open my eyes or let myself feel afraid. i know its kind of weird i don't know if anything was attached to me or if I'm just sensitive. anything helps thank you :)

Neurologically speaking what is happening is your sleep rhythm is disrupted. You are plunging from conscious awareness directly into REM (or waking from REM directly into conscious awareness). There's lots of causes for this; poor sleep hygiene, stress, alcohol or drug abuse, certain medications and supplements. What is happening is your body is shut off and hypnagogic imagery is turned on but you are consciously awake.

On a mystical, spiritual, and oneiromantic level being able to consciously induce this state is a high level practice. This in between state and being able to maintain that consciousness into the dream so there is no "disruption" (losing consciousness and waking in a dream) is the entire point of the tibetan practice of sleep and dream yoga and your ability to maintain this consciousness from sleep paralysis into a dream state is directly correlated to your ability to retain consciousness through death and reincarnation. Sleep paralysis is a powerful tool when you are in the midst of it to transition into lucid dreaming, astral projection, and advanced sleep yoga/meditation. I used to experience it frequently before I adopted oneiromantic practices, but when you experience it use it as an opportunity to practice.
